One motorcyclist died and two others suffered major injuries Sunday when they ran into a disabled car on the San Mateo-Hayward Bridge, the California Highway Patrol said.

Authorities identified the dead rider as 34-yearold Kyle Davis, of Sacramento. The other two, a man and woman in their 20s who rode together, were rushed to Stanford Medical Center.

The two motorcycles, both Harley-Davidsons, were the last ones in a group going west across the bridge on state Highway 92 around 9:55 a.m. At the bridge’s high-rise, the motorcycles came upon a BMW that had broken down in the far right lane, the CHP said.

Most of the motorcycles moved into the middle lane and avoided the BMW, but the CHP said the final two motorcycles did not. The CHP said it did not have an answer for why they crashed into the car.

According to the CHP, the solo motorcyclist died after being vaulted over the bridge and into the water about 135 feet below. The U.S. Coast Guard recovered his body.

The BMW’s driver and passenger were on the bridge walking west and away from the car when the crash happened, the CHP said.

The CHP is investigating to determine whether drugs and/or alcohol may have played a role. Toxicology tests taken during an autopsy by the San Mateo County Coroner’s Office won’t be finished for several weeks.

Anyone with additional information on the crash can contact CHP Officer David Tran at 650-3696261.
