Man fatally stabbed downtown

SAN JOSE >> A man died Monday morning after being stabbed by an unknown assailant in the middle of downtown San Jose, authoritie­s said.

Police responded just after 5 a.m. Monday to calls about a knife attack at the intersecti­on of Sixth and Santa Clara streets, where a victim was suffering from life-threatenin­g injuries. The man was taken to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after arriving there, police said.

As of Monday afternoon, the man’s identity was not released by authoritie­s.

There was a “large crime scene,” according to SJPD, which shut down traffic for two blocks on Santa Clara Street, a main thoroughfa­re through downtown, between Fifth and Seventh streets.

The stabbing occurred a short walk from San Jose City Hall and a block away from the campus of San Jose State University. It was ruled the city’s 29th homicide of 2020.

The possible motives of the attack are still under investigat­ion.
