Trustees select new president for Cal State East Bay
HAYWARD >> Cathy Sandeen has been named the next president of Cal State East Bay.
Sandeen will step into the position Jan. 4, and will be taking over from Leroy Morishita, who is retiring Dec. 31.
T he universit y system’s board of trustees announced the appointment of Sandeen, an Oakland native and currently the chancellor of the University of Alaska Anchorage, on Wednesday.
“I am thrilled to return to the Bay Area to work alongside Cal State East Bay’s gifted faculty and staff to further the academic achievement of this wonderfully diverse group of students attending the Hayward and Concord campuses,” Sandeen said in a statement.
“My own previous experiences and future aspirations closely match Cal State East Bay’s values, and the university-wide commitments to communities of color and sustainability are particularly relevant in this time. I embrace those commitments and will work to further the university’s leadership in these critically important areas,” she said.
Morishita has served as president of Cal State East Bay since 2012.
“She is a proven leader with a long and demonstrated history of innovation leading to greater opportunity and success for all students,” Morishita said of Sandeen in a statement.
In 2018, Sandeen was appointed chancellor of the University of Alaska Anchorage. Before then, she was chancellor of the University of Wisconsin Colleges and the University of Wisconsin-Extension from 2014 to 2018.
She was vice president for education attainment and innovation position for the American Council on Education from 2012 to 2014 and as dean at the University of California, Los Angeles Extension, from 2006 to 2012.
She has also held various leadership roles at UCSanta Cruz and UCSF and taught at Santa Clara University, San Jose State University, the University of Utah, Stanford University and San Francisco State University.
Sandeen has a bachelor’s degree from Humboldt State University and a master’s from San Francisco State University. She also has a master’s degree from UCLA and a doctorate from the University of Utah.
