Bay Area arts: Steinway Society, Tabard Theatre, Mermen, ‘Nutcracker’

Here are several live and streaming performanc­es Bay Area arts fans should know about.

Steinway Society: The piano recital series continues its fall virtual season with another exclusive performanc­e, this time from Russian star Zlata Chochieva. The piano prodigy has been performing publicly since she was 5, and has won raves for her solo work and appearance­s with major orchestras. Gramophone magazine says she “brings an inner glow to every bar.” She performs works by Schubert, Liszt, Rachmanino­ff and Prokofiev, among others.

Diablo Ballet: The Walnut Creek company traditiona­lly gets an early jump on the holiday arts season, and presents a virtual version of its special, San Francisco-set take on “The Nutcracker” at 7:30 p.m. Friday. Ticket buyers will have access to the production through Sunday and can also attend a Sugar Plum Party via Zoom at 3 p.m. Saturday. Details: $35; diabloball­et.org.

Tabard Theater: The intriguing relationsh­ip between a famous judge (Francis Biddle, who presided at the post-World War II Nuremberg Trials) and an administra­tive assistant is at the center of the 2004 play “Trying,” which is being streamed by San Jose’s Tabard Theater. The play by Joanna McClelland Glass — based on her experience­s working with Biddle — stars Rich Holman and Melissa Momboisse and is directed by Doug Baird. Details: Through Nov.

The Mermen: The famed Bay Area band, which has sought to broaden its eclectic sound since its surf/psychedeli­a origins in 1989, performs on an outdoor stage created by The Chapel nightclub in San Francisco. Masks are required, tables are socially distanced and seat two, four or six people.
