Da Silva pours in 32 points as Stanford tops Northridge

Oscar da Silva scored a career-high 32 points and grabbed nine rebounds to help the Stanford men beat host Cal State Northridge 82-71 on Tuesday.

Da Silva was 9 of 11 from the field and 14 of 14 from the free-throw line to top his previous best of 27 points against Oregon in February.

Da Silva, averaging 17.3 points per game, scored 17 of Stanford’s 36 firsthalf points.

Freshman Ziaire Williams scored all 12 of his points in the second half for Stanford (3-2). Noah Taitz also scored 12 points, and Spencer Jones 10. Stanford is scheduled to open Pac12 play against Arizona in Santa Cruz on Saturday.

Lance Coleman II made six 3-pointers and scored 20 points for CSUN (32), which is 0- 6 against Stanford. TJ Starks had 19 points, five rebounds, four assists and five steals.

VIRGINIA TECH 66, NO. 24 CLEMSON 60 >> Tyrece Radford scored 15 points, and the host Hokies handed the 24thranked Tigers their first loss.

Radford hit 5 of 11 from the floor and 5 of 6 from the free-throw line for the Hokies (5-1, 1- 0 Atlantic Coast Conference), who won their conference opener for the fifth time in the past six seasons. Keve Aluma and Nahiem Alleyne each added 13 points for Virginia Tech, which was 25 for 31 on free throws, including 4 for 4 in the waning seconds. Alleyne’s two free throws with 10.7 seconds remaining pushed the Hokies’ lead to 64- 60, and after Clemson’s Al-Amir Dawes missed a 3-pointer, the Tigers fouled Hunter Cattoor, who hit two free throws with a second left to seal it for the Hokies.

Dawes led Clemson (5-1, 0-1) with a game-high 18 points.

NO. 13 ILLINOIS 92, MINNESOTA 65 >> Kofi Cockburn scored a career-high 33 points and grabbed 13 rebounds in only 25 minutes to lead the Illini past the Gophers in the Big Ten opener for both teams. Freshman guard Adam Miller added 14 points, while Trent Frazier and Ayo Dosunmu each scored 10 for Illinois (5-2). Dosunmu also had seven rebounds and five assists.

Marcus Carr had 16 points for Minnesota (6-1). Carr, the team’s leading scorer, was just 3 of 13 from the field UTAH 75, UTAH VALLEY 67 >> Timmy Allen scored a season-high 19 points to lead the Utes (3-1). Utah held the Wolverines scoreless over the final 3:21 of the second half.

COVID CANCELLATI­ONS:

• USC has postponed or canceled its next three games while team activities continue to be halted because of a confirmed case of COVID-19. The school said it canceled home games against USF today and Texas Southern on Dec. 23, and postponed its road game at Oregon State on Dec.

USC postponed its Pac-12 opener at home against Stanford last weekend when it first reported the positive COVID-19 test.

To make up the loss of the USC game, the Dons added a game at Oregon on Thursday.

• UCLA postponed its men’s basketball game against Long Beach State on Tuesday night. The school says the game is off out of “an abundance of caution” based on COVID-19 protocols within the Long Beach program.

• UNLV is pausing in- person team activities due to a confirmed case of COVID-19. The Runnin’ Rebels’ games against Wyoming on Sunday and Tuesday will not be played as scheduled.

DUKE’S JOHNSON OUT WITH FOOT INJURY >> No. 21 Duke says freshman forward Jalen Johnson is out indefinite­ly with a foot injury. The team announced the 6-foot-9 Johnson would not travel for today’s Atlantic Coast Conference opener at Notre Dame.

Johnson has started all four games, averaging 11.5 points and 8.3 rebounds with 2.0 blocks. FLORIDA’S JOHNSON SPEAKING, CALLING TEAMMATES VIA FACETIME >> Florida forward Keyontae Johnson is speaking with family members and doctors and was even able to FaceTime his teammates, his parents said in a statement released by the school.

Johnson remains in stable condition at UF Health. He collapsed on the court during a game at Florida State on Saturday. He was moved to Gainesvill­e via helicopter Monday with his mother by his side.

Women

NO. 3 UCONN 92, SETON HALL 65 >> Paige Bueckers scored 25 points in her second game for the third-ranked Huskies in their return to the Big East. Visiting UConn (2- 0, 1- 0 Big East) rejoined the conference on July 1 after a seven-year stint in the American Athletic Conference. As members of the Big East from 1982-2013, Connecticu­t won 19 regular-season and 18 tournament league titles.

Seton Hall (2-2, 0-1 Big East) pulled within six a couple times early in the third third quarter, but UConn pulled away from there.

UConn only played its second game of the season due to having four games canceled or postponed after a staff member in the program tested positive for the coronaviru­s.

Lauren Park-Lane scored 29 points for Seton Hall, and Desiree Elmore had 11 points and seven rebounds before fouling out.

CAL POLY 70, SANTA CLARA 59 >> The Broncos (1-2) shot just 2 of 17 from the field during the opening 10 minutes, committed six turnovers and couldn’t recover against the host Mustangs (3-1). Cal Poly scored the final 13 points of the first quarter as part of a 15- 0 run that saw them take a 19-5 lead a few seconds into the second quarter.

Ashlyn Herlihy led the Broncos with 16 points on 6- of-9 shooting.

Santa Clara stays on the road for two games at UC Santa Barbara this weekend.
