Garza’s big game powers No. 5 Iowa past Gophers

Luka Garza scored 33 points, and Joe Wieskamp added 20 as No. 5 Iowa defeated No. 16 Minnesota 86-71 on Sunday at home.

Jordan Bohannon had 19 points and a career-high 14 assists for the Hawkeyes (11-2, 5-1 Big Ten), who avenged their overtime loss to the Golden Gophers on Christmas. Bohannon did not have a turnover in 36 minutes.

Iowa, which led 39-37 at halftime, opened the second half with a 22- 6 run. Garza had 10 of his points in that stretch.

Minnesota ( 10- 4, 3- 4) rallied from a 63- 45 deficit to get to within five points twice late in the second half. The Gophers defeated Iowa 102-95 in overtime on Dec. 25 by coming back from seven points down with 44 seconds left.

Garza, who came into the game leading the nation in scoring at 27.2 points per game, was 13 of 20 from the field.

Bohannon, who missed most of last season after undergoing a second hip surgery, has scored 74 points in his last four games combined after scoring just 27 in the previous five.

Jack Nunge added 10 rebounds for the Hawkeyes.

Both Gach and Marcus Carr scored 13 points apiece for the Gophers. Brandon Johnson had 12. Liam Robbins added 10.

Carr had 30 points and Johnson 26 against the Hawkeyes earlier this season.

MARYLAND 66, NO. 12 ILLINOIS 63 >> Darryl Morsell scored 19 points, and Donta Scott added 16 as the visiting Terrapins (7- 6, 2-5) handled the host Ilini (9- 4, 5-2). Ayo Dosunmu scored 23 points for Illinois.

FRESNO STATE 80, SAN JOSE STATE 65 >> Deon Stroud made 5 of 6 3-pointers and scored a career-high 22 points as the Bulldogs (53, 3-3 Mountain West) got past the Spartans. Richard Washington had 24 points and eight rebounds for San Jose State (2-8, 0- 6).

LOYOLA MARYMOUNT 68, USF 60 >> The Dons fell behind by as many as 19 points in the first half but came all the way back to the game with five minutes to go, but the host Lions pulled away at the end.

USF (8- 6, 2-2 WCC) was led by Khalil Shabazz with 16 points and Jamaree Bouyea with 12. Eli Scott scored 20 points for Loyola Marymount (6- 3, 1- 0), which won its fourth straight.

GEORGIA TECH HALTS 3RD GAME IN ROW >> Georgia Tech has called off its third straight game because of COVID-19. The Yellow Jackets (6- 3, 2-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) were set to host Pittsburgh (6-2, 2-1) in Atlanta on Wednesday. But the game has been postponed because of positive tests within the Georgia Tech program. No makeup date has been determined.

T he Yellow Jackets haven’t played since a Jan. 3 victory over Wake Forest.

Women

NO. 11 OREGON 100, CAL 41 >>

The host Bears (0-10, 0-7 Pac-12) were held to four points in the second quarter and eight in the third as the 11th-ranked Ducks kept Cal winless.

Kylee Watson scored a career high 12 points for Oregon (9-2, 7-2), which lost to Stanford on Friday.

Ugonne Onyiah scored 13 points for Cal. WASHINGTON STATE 71, NO. 7 ARIZONA 69 >> Charlisse Leger-Walker made a layup at the buzzer in overtime to lift the host Cougars (71, 5-1 Pac-12) past the seventhran­ked Wildcats. Leger-Walker also made a layup with two seconds left in regulation to tie it at 60, converting after a pass from sister Krystal LegerWalke­r.

Arizona (8-2, 6-2 Pac12) led by double digits for most of the game but saw its edge evaporate in the fourth quarter. Aari McDonald had 23 points and 11 rebounds for the Wildcats.

NO. 9 UCLA 92, UTAH 67 >>

Natalie Chou scored a career-high 28 points, and the Bruins (7-2, 5-2 Pac-12) routed the Utes (3-7, 2-7).
