- Staff, news service reports

Just as the Santa Clara University men’s basketball team got approval to return home, the Broncos had to temporarily shut down the season.

Santa Clara school officials announced Tuesday the Broncos have paused all team-related activities because of positive COVID-19 cases and related contact tracing.

The development comes a day after Santa Clara County public health officers rescinded a ban on playing and practicing for professional and college teams. The Broncos (9-4, 3-2, WCC) had to move to Santa Cruz since the county order was implemented at the end of November.

Santa Clara was scheduled to play Thursday against the University of the Pacific. It might have been the team’s first game of the season in the Leavey Center on campus. Officials postponed the game as well as those at Portland on Saturday, a home game on Feb. 4 against rival Saint Mary’s and at top-ranked Gonzaga on Feb. 6.

The Broncos next scheduled game is Feb. 11 against Gonzaga (15-0, 6-0) at home.
