Police responded to separate overnight calls involving people who barricaded themselves inside homes across town from each other, according to San Jose police.
The first incident was reported at 3:25 a.m. in the 1500 block of Meridian Avenue, in the Willow Glen area. Police reported that they were investigating a domestic disturbance at a residence attached to a business, and that a man and woman were not coming out.
Meridian Avenue between Minnesota Avenue and Alta Glen Drive was blocked off for the police response, which included SWAT officers.
At 10:14 a.m., San Jose police tweeted, “The suspect in this incident has been safely taken into custody. The investigation is ongoing.” Police confirmed that the man was arrested.
In East San Jose, around 4:08 a.m., residents of a home on Primm Avenue, in the city’s Tropicana neighborhood off King Road, called police to report that a man was banging on their door and trying to get inside.
Police said that as responding officers approached the home, the man broke a window and went inside. The family living there escaped safely, and the intruder refused to come out.
Primm Avenue was closed between Christopher Street and Miami Drive. For several hours, officers tried to get the man to come out and surrender, at one point communicating to him through an open door.
Around 11:30 a.m., police announced that the man had been arrested. In response to an inquiry from this news organization, police confirmed that at some point the man was seen holding some kind of bladed object, and they sent in a police dog, which bit the man. He was arrested soon after.
The suspect, who wasn’t immediately identified, was taken to a local hospital for treatment, after which he was expected to be “booked for residential burglary as well as other charges,” police said.
