Rodgers gives $1 million to help Chico businesses
Green Bay Packers quarterback and reigning MVP Aaron Rodgers has donated $1 million to help 80 locally owned business in or around his hometown of Chico.
The businesses that Rodgers is assisting are all either in Chico or in Butte County, where Chico is located. Restaurants and retail businesses with 20 or fewer full-time equivalent employees could apply for help through this fund.
All 80 of those businesses will receive grants through the Aaron Rodgers Small-Business COVID-19 Fund at North Valley Community Foundation in Chico. The grants will total over $1 million.
These grants will help cover rent for an average of three months or longer, and they also will assist in other operational costs.
“Small, locally owned businesses are the heart and soul of a community,” Rodgers said in a statement. “In the applications and the videos, it was heart-wrenching to hear about all the obstacles facing restaurants and retail establishments. So many of them are struggling just to stay in business but remain hopeful that there’s an end to this.”
Rodgers, a former Cal star, started the fund by making a $500,000 donation in early February. He later decided to increase his donation to $1 million. The fund also has received donations from other sources totaling more than $200,000.
This comes after Rodgers donated $1 million to recovery of the fires that hit Butte County in November 2018. Rodgers made that donation through a North Valley Community Foundation fund that eventually raised more than $3 million with assistance from fans and corporate partners.

The Kansas City Chiefs expect Patrick Mahomes to be ready for offseason workouts following surgery on his toe, and they are optimistic that offensive tackles Eric Fisher and former Cal standout Mitchell Schwartz could be available for the start of training camp.
Mahomes had surgery on Feb. 10, shortly after the Chiefs were walloped by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the Super Bowl, to repair a turf toe injury that had hobbled him throughout the playoffs. The recovery time is about three months, which means Mahomes — whose fiancée recently gave birth to their first child — could be ready for summer minicamp.

The Texans signed the 41-yearold in November, but he did not appear in a game. He last appeared in a game in Jan. 2020 when he took over for an injured Carson Wentz in Philadelphia’s 17-9 playoff loss to Seattle.

CAL CLOSES IN ON STANFORD >> Cal put itself within striking distance of first-place Stanford at the Pac-12 Men’s Swimming Championships at Houston’s CRWC, winning all three individual races and the 200-yard freestyle relay.
Trenton Julian set the Pac-12 Championships and Cal school records with a finish of 4:09.49 in the 500 free, Hugo González won the 200 IM and Ryan Hoffer repeated as the 50 free champ. Nate Biondi, Seeliger, Hoffer and Daniel Carr won the 200 free relay.
Halfway through the four-day championship meet, Cal (334 points) trails only Stanford (339).

MORIKAWA RANKED NO. 4 IN WORLD >>
Collin Morikawa ascended to fourth in the latest Official World Golf Ranking after winning the World Golf Championships-Workday Championship this past weekend.
Morikawa, 24, moved up two spots on Monday to reside behind only world No. 1 Dustin Johnson, Jon Rahm of Spain and Justin Thomas.
Morikawa, a former Cal star, finished at 18-under-par 270 to claim a three-stroke victory over Billy Horschel, Brooks Koepka and Norway’s Viktor Hovland on Sunday in Bradenton, Fla. The 2020 PGA Championship winner, Morikawa emerged victorious for the fourth time since turning pro in 2019.

NEW PRESIDENT FOR SACRAMENTO >> Ben Gumpert said he will resign as president and chief operating officer of the United Soccer League’s Republic, a move announced three days after Major League Soccer said Ron Burkle had backed out of plans for an expansion team in Sacramento.
Republic chairman Kevin Nagle said general manager Todd Dunivant will become team president of the second-tier club. Dunivant is a former Stanford star who played for the Earthquakes in 2003 and helped the Los Angeles Galaxy win the MLS Cup in 2005.
Tennis
DJOKOVIC TIES FEDERER’S STREAK >> Novak Djokovic is gaining on Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal in the Grand Slam standings, and he’s already caught Federer in another significant statistic: As of Monday, Djokovic has been No. 1 in the ATP rankings for a total of 310 weeks.
That equals Federer’s career record for most time spent atop the rankings. And no matter what happens over the next week, Djokovic is assured of breaking Federer’s mark on March 8.
Pete Sampras is third on the list, with 286 weeks.
Djokovic’s Australian Open championship last month gave the 33-yearold from Serbia 18 Grand Slam singles trophies. Only Federer and Nadal, each with 20, have more.
