Curry is out against 76ers; Wiseman, Paschall could return
Warriors guard Stephen Curry is out for today’s game against the Philadelphia 76ers at Chase Center.
Curry, who missed the previous two games with a bruised tailbone he suffered in last week’s win in Houston, did not practice Monday and will continue to be considered day-to-day.
“He’s still pretty sore,” head coach Steve Kerr said. “He’s not ready to go.”
Golden State is 1-3 in
games without Curry this season and split its backto-back set in Memphis after his injury. Meanwhile, the 76ers have the best record in the Eastern Conference and have won four of their last five games with Joel Embiid sidelined with a knee injury.
Curry, 33, lost his balance as he backpedaled after a missed 3-point attempt with 2.9 seconds
left in the third quarter of last Wednesday’s win over the Rockets. He fell onto a metal riser near the court and, after grabbing his backside in pain, walked toward the locker room under his own power.
Meanwhile, Warriors center Kevon Looney will be available for Tuesday’s game after clearing the NBA’s health and safety protocols.
Looney, 25, flew back to the Bay Area with the team after Saturday’s 111103 loss in Memphis in which Golden State struggled without a true center. Second-year forward Alen Smailagic started at center but finished with three points on 1-for-5 shooting, no rebounds, no assists and five fouls in eight minutes.
Looney was entered into the protocols because he registered a false positive COVID-19 test, which allowed him to return to the court faster than the usual seven-day process.
Though Looney averages just 4 points and 4.1 rebounds in 15 minutes per game, he’s a steady defensive presence who helps to stabilize Golden State’s frontcourt.
Center James Wiseman and forward Eric Paschall, both of whom are in the league’s health and safety protocols for coronavirus contact tracing, could also return for the 76ers game if they clear a final round of coronavirus testing by this afternoon, according to Kerr.
“If they do then there’s a chance they’ll be available tomorrow,” Kerr said.
