QI’ve lived in Palo Alto for about 23 years, and it seems like some portion of Highway 101 between San Francisco and San Jose has been under construction the entire time. Are they ever going to be done?

— Ronald Krasno, Palo Alto

ANo, and I am not joking. There are numerous projects planned over the next few decades on Highway 101, mostly involving new interchanges from San Mateo to Morgan Hill. Here are a few things coming or being considered:

• Opening express lanes from Highway 85 to Interstate 380 south of San Francisco International Airport later this year.

• Begin work to add a second right exit lane from south 101 to south 87 in the next year.

• Overnight lane closures between Third Street and Vermont Street in San Francisco later this month to install antiskid pavement. Work will last into 2022.

• Finishing a new interchange at Blossom Hill Road in San Jose in an

other year.

•Widening101 from Morgan Hill to Highway 129 in San Benito County in eight years.

• Modernizing interchanges at Highway 92, Story Road, Moffett Boulevard,

Oakland Road and Woodside Road.

Q

We were stuck in this scenario on Sunday on Highway 101, between Fair Oaks and Highway 237. There were four cars (Chargers, Corvette, Mustang) which raced up the freeway in the left lane, then fanned out to all four lanes. They positioned themselves in parallel lanes, taking up the width of the freeway.

They proceeded to slow to 30 mph, slowing the entire freeway. They maintained this speed until the road in front of them cleared, then they all took off in a drag race up the freeway.

This stunt was infuriating, not just because traffic was stuck behind them, but because it was dangerous and irresponsible.

Is there any action a motorist can take to report these folks? Will the CHP really do anything?

A You can call 911 and ifatrooperisnearby, one may come out. Otherwise, take that deep breath and let it go.

QGetting out of the way of speeders is always a good idea and occasionally makes you smile.

On a trip from San Jose to Granite Bay, I was being tailgated on Highway 84 through Livermore. While I was at, or possibly over the speed limit, the jerk behind me apparently didn’t think I was going fast enough. I moved over so he could zip by and about 15 seconds later, a CHP motorcycle took off after him and I saw the jerk pulled over.

It is always nice to see karma in action. — David Kenyon

A

Yes, it is.
