Schwarber, Scherzer deliver for Nationals

Kyle Schwarber hit a gameending homer in the ninth inning to lift Washington over Arizona after Max Scherzer passed Cy Young on baseball’s career strikeouts list.

Scherzer, a three-time Cy Young Award winner, struck out the side in the seventh while passing Young to move into 22nd place on baseball’s strikeout list. He finished with 10 on the day, giving him 2,808 for his career.

Scherzer allowed two singles and walked two in seven innings. After allowing a single to Kole Calhoun in the first, Scherzer retired 13 straight batters before allowing consecutiv­e walks in the fifth.

It was the first double-digit strikeout game this season for Scherzer. It was No. 99 for his career, and it came against his first major league team. MARLINS 4, GIANTS 1 >> Starling Marte snapped an eighthinni­ng tie with a three-run homer and Miami defeated visiting San Francisco.

Jazz Chisholm Jr. also homered for the Marlins. Marte’s shot to left-center field off reliever Wandy Peralta sent Miami to its fifth win in six games. REDS 10, INDIANS 3 >> Joey Votto hit a two-run homer to cap a seven-run third inning and Cincinnati cruised past Cleveland.

Jeff Hoffman (2-1) gave the Reds another solid start, surrenderi­ng just a run and seven hits through six innings and helping himself with a looping RBI single in the third. ORIOLES 5, RANGERS 2 >> Rio Ruiz and D.J. Stewart homered while Jorge López struck out eight in five innings, leading Baltimore over Texas.

No. 9 hitter Freddy Galvis had two extra-base hits and scored twice for the Orioles, who improved to 5-2 on the road this season.

PIRATES 6, BREWERS 1 >> JT Brubaker (2-0) struck out eight and allowed one run in six innings to lead Pittsburgh past Milwaukee.
