Island vibes

- — Randy McMullen, Staff

Bay Area musician and teacher Patrick Landeza likes to joke that he was born on the “Island of Berkeley,” but he will forever be associated with the music of a different island culture — Hawaii.

A longtime devotee of the slack key guitar — which features a unique tuning and is emblematic of Hawaiian music — Lendaza has become something of a Bay Area ambassador of the islands’ music. In 2013, he became the first mainland musician to capture a Na Hoku Hanohano award, considered Hawaii’s equivalent of a Grammy, with the album “Slack Key Huaka’i.” Still based in the East Bay, Landeza is also an author, teacher and artist.

Now he is out with a new album, titled “Far Away” — available on such sites as Amazon, mele.com and Landeza’s own website, patricklandeza. com — and is set to livestream two shows at Bay Area clubs to celebrate the release. He plays the Freight & Salvage in Berkeley on Saturday, with bandmates Justin Firmeza on steel guitar and Kit Madrid on bass. On May 2, he plays the Club Fox in Redwood City, in a show that also features music duo Kūpaoa and special guest Chris Lau.

Details: 7 p.m. Saturday; a donation of $10 or more gets you access to the show; thefreight.org; 4 p.m. May 2; free; howlive.tv/event/Patrick.
