Reds prevail in slugfest with Cubs

Nick Castellano­s hit a game-ending RBI single in the 10th inning, lifting the Cincinnati Reds to a wild 13-12 victory over the visiting Chicago Cubs on Sunday.

Jesse Winker began the Cincinnati 10th on second and advanced on Willson Contreras’ passed ball. Castellano­s then poked a liner into center field against Craig Kimbrel.

Castellano­s finished with five hits and four RBIs against his former team, including two of the Reds’ five homers. Mike Moustakas, Eugenio Suárez and Tucker Barnhart also connected.

Chicago also went deep five times, but lost for the seventh time in nine games. Kris Bryant homered twice.

The Cubs trailed 12-8 before scoring four times with two out in the eighth. Jake Marisnick singled in Jason Heyward before Ian Happ belted a threerun drive off Tejay Antone.

The 35-year-old righthande­r looked like the pitcher who won American League Cy Young Awards with Cleveland in 2014 and 2017, before injuries wrecked his 2018 and ’19 seasons.

Kluber (2-2) allowed two hits in eight innings, walked one and struck out 10 to reach double digits for the 47th time but first since Sept. 24, 2018. NATIONALS 3, MARLINS 1 >> Max Scherzer tossed a five-hitter, Ryan Zimmerman hit a threerun homer and Washington defeated Miami.

Scherzer (2-2) carried a shutout into the ninth inning before Isan Diaz led off with a home run.

The right-hander struck out nine without a walk and hit a batter.

CARDINALS 3, PIRATES 0 >> Carlos Martínez pitched eight marvelous innings, Harrison Bader hit a second-inning three-run homer and St. Louis blanked Pittsburgh for a three-game sweep.

BLUE JAYS 7, BRAVES 2 >> Marcus Semien homered and drove in four runs as Toronto finished off a three-game sweep of Atlanta after Blue Jays newcomer George Springer exited early.

There was no immediate announceme­nt on why Joe Panik pinch-hit for Springer in the sixth inning.

Springer was the designated hitter for the fourth consecutiv­e game since making his Toronto debut Wednesday. INDIANS 5, WHITE SOX 0 >> José Ramirez and Cesar Hernandez homered, Amed Rosario had three hits and Cleveland shut out Chicago.

Zach Plesac (2-3) and three relievers combined to limit the White Sox to four hits.

DIAMONDBAC­KS 8, ROCKIES 4>> Stephen Vogt hit a goahead, two-run triple in the eighth inning, Josh Rojas and Daulton Varsho added RBI doubles and Arizona rallied past Colorado for its 10th win in 13 games since a 5-10 start to the season.
