Westbrook’s big night carries Wizards to wild win

-

Russell Westbrook had the third game in NBA history with 20-plus rebounds and 20-plus assists — he and Wilt Chamberlain have the other two — and the surging Wizards moved closer to Indiana in the Eastern Conference playoff standings by outgunning the Pacers 154-141 on Monday night in Washington.

Westbrook had 14 points to go along with his careerhigh 21 rebounds and career-high-tying 24 assists, his league-leading 32nd triple-double of the season. He has 178 triple-doubles, three short of Oscar Robertson’s record, with seven games remaining for Washington.

Rui Hachimura scored 27 points and Bradley Beal had 26 as Washington scored a season high and moved within one-half game of Indiana for ninth in the East. HAWKS 123, TRAIL BLAZERS 114>> Danilo Gallinari made seven 3-pointers and finished with 28 points, leading the Hawks in Atlanta. MAGIC 119, PISTONS 112>> Mo Bamba had 22 points and 15 rebounds — both career highs — for Orlando in Detroit. Magic coach Steve Clifford cleared NBA health and safety protocols for COVID-19 and will return to the bench Wednesday against Boston. LAKERS’ SCHRODER COULD MISS NEXT TWO WEEKS >> Los Angeles Lakers guard Dennis Schroder is expected to miss 10-14 days due to the NBA’s health and safety protocols, The Athletic reported. Schroder, 27, was listed as inactive for the Lakers’ 121-114 loss to visiting Toronto on Sunday. CAVALIERS TO SIGN VAREJÃO IN CEREMONIAL MOVE>> Center Anderson Varejão is expected to sign with the Cavaliers for the remainder of the season after the NBA granted the team a roster hardship exception. The 38-year-old’s return would be a ceremonial move by the team, which wants to honor Varejão for his 12 seasons with the team before he was traded in 2016.
