Ex-A’s slugger Davis activated off IL by Rangers

-

Veteran designated hitter Khris Davis, who has been out all season with a strained left quadriceps, was activated off the 10-day injured list by the Texas Rangers on Saturday.

Davis, 33, opened the season on the IL with a Grade 2 left quad strain he suffered during a spring training game against the Angels on March 23.

In a Feb. 6 trade with the A’s, the Rangers acquired Davis along with catcher Jonah Heim and RHP Dane Acker in exchange for shortstop Elvis Andrus, catcher Aramis Garcia and cash considerations.

Davis hit 158 home runs for the A’s from 2016-20, the fourth-highest total in MLB over that span behind only Nelson Cruz (176), Nolan Arenado (165) and Mike Trout (158). In 30 games last season, Davis hit .200 with two homers and 10 RBIs.

Davis produced at least 40 home runs and 100 RBIs in three straight seasons from 2016-18. He led MLB with 48 home runs in 2018.

LA RUSSA: NO ROOM ON SOX FOR PUJOLS >> Tony La Russa and Albert Pujols have quite a history together, but the Chicago White Sox manager says he doesn’t see a future for the slugger on his team.

Pujols, a sure-fire future Hall of Famer, was designated for assignment by the Los Angeles Angels on Thursday but wants to keep playing after he clears waivers.

Pujols hit .198 with five homers and 12 RBIs this season.

La Russa said there’s just no place to fit Pujols in the lineup, where the White Sox have reigning AL MVP Jose Abreu at first and Yermin Mercedes, who is hitting .380, as their primary designated hitter.

“We have Jose (Abreu) and Yermin (Mercedes) and even if Yermin gets less hot, it’s a good way to DH other guys, get them off their feet,” La Russa said. “There is no fit here, unfortunately.”
