The 2021 Volvo V90 T6 AWD R-Design Station Wagon

You Are What You Drive — A Bottom Line Review

- By Tony Leopardo

The Bottom Line: Volvo is a Swedish car company that began its long history of safe and luxurious vehicles in Gothenburg, Sweden. The company was founded in 1927, and the first vehicle they produced was the ÖV4, nicknamed Jakob.

Renowned for their years of leadership in automotive safety, Volvo Cars is now owned by Geely Automobile, a major automotive brand based in China, and today Volvo is headquartered in Torslanda, Sweden. Volvo manufactures sport utility vehicles, station wagons, hatchbacks, sedans and compact executive sedans.

Volvo built their first car in 1927, and started building station wagons in 1953, the Volvo Duett. The Duett introduced Volvo to the world outside of Scandinavia, and was the station wagon that started it all. They never stopped building wagons, and today Volvo builds and sells 5 different styled station wagons.

Practicality and luxury go hand-inhand in the 2021 Volvo V90 station wagon, as it is based on the automaker’s award winning S90 4 door sedan. This week Volvo sent me a 2021 Volvo V90 T6 AWD R-Design Wagon to test drive and review. The base window sticker price for this model is $57,800.

The options on the press car are: The Climate Package for $750, Advanced Package for $1,500, Metallic Paint for $645, Polestar Performance Upgrade package for $1,295, a Bowers and Wilkins Premium Sound System for $3,200, the Four Corner Adaptive Air Suspension system for $1,200, the Advanced Air Quality system with an Advanced Air Cleaner for $250, and 20” 5-Double Spoke Alloy Wheels for $800. The total MSRP manufactures suggested retail price, including the $995 destination charge came to: $68,435.

When you add in the state and local sales tax, plus the DMV and dealer fees, your at $77,000 out the door. That price puts this Volvo V90 wagon in the midsize luxury car class, and it has the right options, technology and the R-Design features to earn that title. Every additional option package adds to the comfort, safety and security that you want in a luxury family wagon.

Lets break down the V90 T6 AWD R-Design name on the wagon. The V90 is the midsize Volvo wagon line, and the T6 denotes the Twin supercharged and turbocharged version of Volvo’s 2.0L liter inline four cylinder engine, which pumps out 316 horsepower and 296 lb-ft of torque. An 8 speed automatic transmission handles gear changes, and AWD all wheel drive with instant traction is standard.

The R-Design model is the designer edition with over 25 special features, like: an R-Design front black mesh grill, R-Design high gloss black window trim, mirror caps and grill frame, Gloss black roof rails, R-Design pedals, an R-Design leather gear shift knob, R-Design leather sport seats and surfaces, power front seats with power lumbar with memory, R-Design alloy wheels, Volvo tread plates, mesh aluminum inlayed trim panels, a charcoal headliner, laminated side windows, tailored dashboard and upper door trim panels, rear sun curtains, and heated front seats, just to name the big ones.

The Polestar Option is a super efficient tuning software upgrade that optimizes engine performance by adding more power and torque to your V90. It is a factory installed and certified, fuel economy, emissions output and performance upgrade. Think AMG like performance, from the Polestar power division of Volvo.

Then add in the Bowers and Wilkins Premium sound system, the four corner adaptive air suspension system, the 20” 5 double spoke alloy wheels upgrade, and the air quality advanced interior air cleaning system. Now your riding and driving in super clean air comfort, with smooth air suspension, plus extra horsepower and torque, for your personal driving pleasure.

The Climate and Advanced Package adds the heated windshield wiper blades, a heated steering wheel, a graphical HUD heads up display, and a 360 degree view camera system. It really does not get much better than this for around $75K in the luxury midsize SUV and station wagon class.

If your in the market for a midsize SUV, but don’t want the tall ride height, boxy looking body, or the extra cost of a premium SUV, then you should consider the Volvo family of station wagons. Volvo is the King of Wagons, and has one to meet everyone’s needs.

When your ready to buy a new family hauler, the Volvo V90 should be on your ride and drive list, as it is one of the best priced and optioned station wagons on the market today. So, call, click or visit your local Volvo dealer for a test drive, and a Bottom Line price review, on the new 2021 Volvo V90 wagon.

A word to the wise is sufficient: Be Smart, Stay Safe, and Just Breathe. Remember, “You Are What You Drive ©” And maybe, just for those reasons alone, you should “Drive one, Buy one, Today ©”.
