Quakes look to end long losing streak to Seattle

-

Two Major League Soccer teams at the top of the Western Conference table meet tonight in San Jose at PayPal

Park, with the Earthquakes looking to end a long drought against the

Seattle Sounders.

Seattle (3-0-1, 10 points), the only undefeated team in the Western Conference, hasn’t lost to the Quakes since 2015, with a streak of 13 straight matches without a loss (7-0-6) since September of that year. It’s the longest active unbeaten streak by any team against another in MLS. Last season, the Sounders owned the Quakes, going unbeaten in all four matches (2-2-0) and outscoring them 11-2.

Seattle has outscored opponents 10-2 in its four matches of the season.

The Quakes (3-1-0, nine points) have won three in a row and have also scored a total of 10 goals, making the Earthquakes and Sounders the league’s top two scoring teams so far. Chris Wondolowski came off the bench Friday to score two late goals after the 80-minute mark to lead San Jose to a 2-1 win over Real Salt Lake.

He and teammate Cade Cowell are the two most recent MLS Players of the Week.

“Chris gets ready every day with the belief that he can keep scoring. He supports whoever is playing and gives everything when he is called up,” Earthquakes coach Matias Almeyda said. “He deserves to score these goals because he is our legend that continues to score.”

San Jose homegrown midfielder Cowell has been one of the league’s breakout stars of the early season. The 17-year-old has two goals and three assists in four matches.
