Brewers bring back Hiura from Triple-A Nashville
The Milwaukee Brewers recalled infielder Keston Hiura from Triple-A Nashville and he was in the starting lineup against the San Diego Padres on Monday.
The Brewers sent down Hiura on May 3 after an abysmal start to the season. But in his nine games at Nashville, Hiura batted .438 with three home runs in 38 plate appearances.
Hiura, 24, a former Valencia High and UC Irvine standout, opened the season hitting .152 with a homer and 32 strikeouts in 79 at-bats. He played 21 games at first base and seven at second. Daniel Vogelbach has had the lion’s share of games played at first in Hiura’s stead.
Hiura’s a career .251 hitter with a .327 on-base and .474 slugging percentage. He has 33 homers and 86 RBIs since making his big-league debut in May 2019. ROCKIES CLAIM RUIZ >> The Colorado Rockies claimed infielder Rio Ruiz off waivers from the Baltimore Orioles.
Ruiz, 27, is a .214 career hitter over parts of six big-league seasons with the Atlanta Braves and Orioles and was batting just .167 over 101 plate appearances this year. He had three homers and six RBIs.
In 2019 and 2020, Ruiz, a Bishop Amat High graduate, had 21 homers and 78 RBIs in 181 games combined, but hit just .232 and .222, respectively. IL MOVES >> The Arizona Diamondbacks reinstated catcher Carson Kelly (left toe) from the 10-day injured list, bringing back one of the team’s few bright spots on offense during a difficult 2021 season. Kelly, who was hitting .338 with six home runs and 19 RBIs through 28 games, has an on-base percentage of .491 and an OPS of 1.103. ... The San Diego Padres placed outfielder Trent Grisham on the 10-day IL because of a bruised heel. ... The Detroit Tigers placed catcher Wilson Ramos on the 10-day IL for the second time this month due to a lumbar strain in his back.
