Gov. Gavin Newsom announced a new giveaway to encourage more Californians to get vaccinated — 50,000 free tickets to the state’s four Six Flags amusement parks for those who get shots at nearby community clinics.

Newsom said in a visit to the Texas-based amusement park chain’s California flagship — Six Flags Magic Mountain in Valencia — that although California has among the country’s highest vaccination rates, “We recognize that a lot of people haven’t gotten vaccinated, and we need to do more to encourage them.”

“Get a single dose of the vaccine,” Newsom said, “(and) you will get a free ticket.”

It is the latest in a series of prizes that Newsom has announced in an effort to encourage more people to get inoculated against COVID-19 and comes a day after the state dropped most face mask requirements and indoor capacity and gathering limitations imposed throughout the pandemic to limit the spread of the virus.

Newsom said the giveaways have worked, citing figures indicating a 22% increase in vaccinations in the past week. A drawing Tuesday awarded $1.5 million each to 10 vaccine recipients, drawings June 4 and 11 gave 30 others $50,000 each and $50 cash or grocery cards are being awarded to the first 2 million people who get vaccinated starting May 27.

Newsom this week announced a July 1 drawing for six “dream vacations” in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Orange County and Palm Springs. Taco Bell, Chipotle, the Golden State Warriors, the L.A. Clippers, the Sacramento Kings and the Team LA store also are offering discounts for people who get vaccinated.

The Six Flags tickets — worth $4.5 million, donated by the company — can be used at Six Flags Magic Mountain, Six Flags Discovery Kingdom in Vallejo and the company’s Hurricane Harbor water parks in Concord

and Los Angeles through Sept. 6.

The free tickets will be available to those who get their first vaccine shot starting Wednesday at participating community clinics located near the parks while supplies last.

Those clinics include Color Health, LifeLong Medical and Tiburcio Vasquez Health Center in Alameda County and LifeLong Medical in Contra Costa County. Details are available online at Covid19.ca.gov/Vax-ForThe-Win.

“Six Flags is proud to support efforts to vaccinate more Californians, particularly in underserved communities,” said Six Flags President and CEO Mike Spanos. “California is a priority market for Six Flags. We are committed to our local communities through ticket donations and having served as vaccination sites across the country. We are excited to safely create fun and thrilling memories for our guests.”
