Indians lose 10-game winner Civale to injury

- By The Associated Press

Indians pitcher Aaron Civale will miss more than one month with a sprained right finger, the latest blow to Cleveland’s injury-ravaged rotation.

Civale, who is tied for the major league lead with 10 wins, injured his middle finger in a start against the Chicago Cubs on Monday.

The Indians said Civale will be shut down from throwing for up to two weeks and the righthander will miss between four to five weeks of game activity.

Civale’s injury comes on the heels of the Indians losing reigning AL Cy Young winner Shane Bieber (shoulder) and Zach Plesac (broken thumb) to injuries.

Civale is 10-2 with a 3.32 ERA in 15 starts this season.

METS’ STROMAN OK AFTER MRI >> The New York Mets received good news about right-hander Marcus Stroman after an MRI on his left hip did not turn up any significant issues.

Stroman left Tuesday night’s game against the Atlanta Braves in the second inning after throwing 23 total pitches, exiting with hip discomfort.

“Everything’s gonna be okay,” he tweeted Wednesday.

Stroman is 6-5 on the season, but the record is deceptive. He has a 2.32 ERA, and the Mets have scored a total of four runs in his five losses.

ALONSO BACK IN DERBY >> The Mets’ Pete Alonso will defend his Home Run Derby title at Denver’s Coors Field on July 12, but there will be no rematch with Vladimir Guerrero Jr. of the Toronto Blue Jays, who has decided not to take part.

Alonso, who hit a rookie-record 53 homers in 2019, made his announcement on his Instagram page. He joins Shohei Ohtani of the Angels in this year’s derby.

Alonso won the derby at Cleveland’s Progressive Field in 2019, the last time it was held, by defeating Guerrero 23-22 in the final round.
