Marlins’ top prospect Sanchez out for season

-

Miami Marlins rookie righthander Sixto Sánchez will miss the rest of the season after an MRI revealed a small tear in the posterior capsule of his throwing shoulder.

He will undergo arthroscopic surgery.

Expected to be one of the mainstays in the club’s starting rotation, Sánchez has been sidelined all season because of shoulder soreness. Sánchez recently experienced a setback while increasing velocity in a throwing program.

The 22-year-old from the Dominican Republic and top prospect in the Marlins’ system made seven starts last season and finished 3-2 with a 3.46 ERA.

“Obviously, awful news starting with him and for us as an organization,” Miami manager Don Mattingly said. “I know we’d like to take the conservative route and hope we wouldn’t get to this but obviously we have.”

Sanchez is rated as the Marlins’ top prospect by MLB Pipeline. He displayed his promise last season by going 3-2 with a 3.46 ERA in seven starts with 33 strikeouts in 39 innings.

Sanchez also made two postseason starts last season, going 0-1 with a 4.50 ERA.

The Marlins acquired Sanchez as part of the deal in which they sent catcher J.T. Realmuto to the Philadelphia Phillies prior to the 2019 season.

CUBS ADD CHIRINOS >> The Chicago Cubs signed veteran catcher Robinson Chirinos for added depth behind starter Willson Contreras.

Originally signed as an amateur free agent by the Cubs in 2000, Chirinos, 37, has hit .231 with 86 home runs and 269 RBIs over 602 games in a nineyear big-league career spent with Tampa Bay, Texas, Houston and the New York Mets.

Chirinos was hitting .278 with three homers through 13 games for the Yankees’ TripleA affiliate when he was released on Sunday.
