Judge among Yankees testing positive for virus

- By The Associated Press

All-Star outfielder Aaron Judge, third baseman Gio Urshela and catcher Kyle Higashioka were added to the COVID-19 injured list by the New York Yankees on Friday, joining pitchers Jonathan Loaisiga, Nestor Cortes Jr. and Wandy Peralta. Loaisiga went on the IL last weekend when New York was in Houston, and Cortes and Peralta were added Thursday.

Additionally, first baseman Luke Voit was added to the injured list with a bone bruise in his left knee.

At least one of Judge, Urshela and Higashioka was not vaccinated, the Yankees said. Manager Aaron Boone said he expects each of the players who tested positive to be out at least 10 days from the time of their positive test. Some of the players are experiencing mild symptoms, but Boone said none has gotten seriously ill.

Players had another round of rapid testing Friday that revealed no other positives.

Judge started for the AL team in Tuesday’s All-Star Game, sparking concern about a potential spread at the midsummer classic. MLB was conducting contact tracing under its protocols, and no other postponements were announced around the league after Thursday’s Red Sox-Yankees game was called off. MARLINS’ CASTRO ON ADMINISTRATIVE LEAVE >> Washington Nationals infielder Starlin Castro was placed on administrative leave by Major League Baseball under its domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse policy.

The leave was imposed under the policy adopted by MLB and the players’ union in 2015 and can be the initial step leading to a longer suspension.

“What I can tell you about myself and this organization, as you know, we do not tolerate any kind of domestic abuse,” Nationals manager Dave Martinez said. “Speaking for myself, I think it’s awful.”

Castro was placed on the restricted list June 16 due to what Martinez at the time said were “family matters.” He was reinstated two days later.

“This is a totally different situation,” Martinez said. “If I would have known about this a month ago, we would have had a different conversation. I can tell you that.”

RED SOX 4, YANKEES 0 >> Eduardo Rodriguez shut down the short-handed Yankees into the sixth inning, Christian Arroyo and J.D. Martinez homered, and visiting Boston beat New York.

Rodriguez (7-5) allowed two hits over 5 2/3 innings, retiring 10 straight during one stretch and finishing with eight strikeouts.

Arroyo hit a two-run drive during a threerun second inning against starter Jordan Montgomery (3-5).

BLUE JAYS 10, RANGERS 2 >> Vladimir Guerrero Jr. followed up his breakout All-Star Game with two homers, and Toronto routed Texas.

All-Stars Teoscar Hernández and Marcus Semien also homered for the Blue Jays along with Randal Grichuk, and Robbie Ray held the Rangers scoreless over 6 2/3 innings.
