SAN JOSE >> Police have released home-security video footage to the public in hopes of drawing tips that might help them solve a 2018 homicide where a man was shot in broad daylight as three men tried to burglarize his home.

Khanh Kieu, 54, was shot and killed inside his Misty Glen Court home in the city’s Sylvandale neighborhood on June 21, 2018. In a neighbor’s footage released Monday, three men in a black 2012-era Lexus ES350 sedan pull up to the front of the home and are seen getting out of the car.

The driver, described as a heavyset man, was carrying a handgun and has been identified as the suspected shooter, police said. The excerpted footage does not show the attempted burglary or the shooting, but does capture the men returning to the car and driving off.

Police spokesman Sgt. Christian Camarillo said there is no indication that the assailants knew the victim, and that the three men might not have been expecting anyone to be home when they sought to burglarize the house.

“There’s no relation between the men and all indications are that it’s a random burglary,” he said.

Camarillo added that detectives authorized the footage release because they have run out of investigative threads.

“We’ve exhausted all leads and we’re asking for the public’s assistance to try and identify these suspects,” he said.

At the time of his death, relatives described Kieu was a father of three who emigrated from Vietnam around 2013 and had been a doctor there.

Anyone with information about Kieu’s killing can contact Detective Sgt. John Cary or Detective Elizabeth Ramirez at 408-277-5283, email Cary at 2989@sanjoseca.gov, or leave a tip with Silicon Valley Crime Stoppers at 408-947-7867 or at svcrimestoppers.org. Tipsters may be eligible for a cash reward.
