SAN JOSE >> Several hundred affordable homes could sprout near the tech hubs of north San Jose, under a preliminary proposal that’s being floated at City Hall.

The development, proposed for a site at 71 Vista Montana in San Jose, would consist of 509 affordable homes, according to documents filed with San Jose city planners.

“The Vista Montana project would help the city meet its affordable housing goals for north San Jose,” said Bob Staedler, principal executive with Silicon Valley Synergy, a land-use consultancy.

The homes would rise at a site now occupied by what city documents state is a vacant research and office building.

Two residential buildings, both eight stories, are slated to be constructed on the site, according to the preliminary planning proposal.

San Jose-based nonprofit organization Charity Housing is affil

iated with the project, the city documents show.

“Charities Housing is committed to developing and managing affordable housing and strives to create developments that contribute positively to communities,” the nonprofit’s website states.

The nonprofit is a unit that Catholic Charites of Santa Clara County established in 1993.

“Our projects are located throughout Santa Clara County,” Charites Housing stated on its website. “The range of housing types includes service-enriched housing for extremely lowincome individuals as well as traditional affordable multi-family housing.”

The development site totals 4.2 acres and is about a block from North First Street. The region is dotted with high-tech companies and sites where more tech and life sciences companies could become occupants.

Significant amenities are expected to be included in the development, the proposal states.

“A public library and child care center will be included in the project development,” according to the planning documents. “Ample public and private open space will be provided, including a paseo connecting Renaissance Drive to Vista Montana Park.”
