Four hoping to replace Newsom debate tonight

With less than two weeks to go before ballots hit the mail, four Republican contenders in the Sept. 14 recall election will face off in a debate tonight in Southern California.

Here are the details:

• What: Four California­ns hoping to unseat Gavin Newsom and become California’s next governor will debate each other and are likely to face questions on everything from the pandemic to homelessne­ss.

• Who: Businessma­n John Cox, former San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer, Assemblyme­mber Kevin Kiley and former U.S. Representa­tive Doug Ose will participat­e in the debate.

• Noticeably absent? Gov. Gavin Newsom, who was invited but will not attend, Larry Elder, the conservati­ve radio host who is leading the field of challenger­s in the polls but will be attending a fundraiser instead, and reality star Caitlyn Jenner, who left the Golden State for Australia, reportedly to film a television show.

• When: From 6-7:30 p.m.

• Where: The Richard Nixon Presidenti­al Library and Museum in Yorba Linda

• Host: The Richard Nixon Foundation and Fox 11 Los Angeles. Hugh Hewitt, president of the foundation, will moderate the debate with former U.S. National Security Advisor Robert O’Brien, and Christine Devine and Elex Michaelson of Fox 11.

• How to watch: The debate will be carried by Fox 11 Los Angeles, KTVU Fox 2 San Francisco and other Fox TV affiliates around the state. It will also air on the Salem Radio Network — that’s KTRB 860 AM in the Bay Area. Viewers also can watch online at FoxLA.com.

• More informatio­n: The Nixon Foundation is planning to host a second debate during the week of Aug. 23.
