Collins wins thriller in San Jose to earn her second title

American Danielle Collins captured her second career title in just a two-week span, holding off No. 4 seed Daria Kasatkina of Russia 6-3, 6-7 (10), 6-1 after a thrilling second-set tiebreaker Sunday in the Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic in San Jose.

Collins, seeded seventh, won her first championsh­ip at Palermo on July 25 in Italy. The 27-year-old Collins dropped just two games in her semifinal rout of Croatian Ana Konjuh.

The 24-year-old Kasatkina beat No. 1 seed Elise Mertens of Belgium 6-3, 6-2 in Saturday’s semifinals to reach her fourth championsh­ip match of the season but missed out on her third title in that span. She earned victories at the Phillip Island Trophy in Melbourne and the St. Petersburg Ladies Open.

It was the third career meeting between them and second on hardcourts this year after Kasatkina defeated Collins 6-2, 6-7 (6), 6-1 in a 2-hour, 29-minute match in February at Phillip Island in Melbourne, Australia.

In doubles, Darija Jurak of Croatia and Andreja Klepac of Slovenia beat Canadian Gabriela Dabrowski and Luisa Stefani of Brazil 6-1, 7-5. SINNER CAPTURES CITI OPEN TITLE >> Jannik Sinner became the first teenager to win an ATP 500 event, edging Mackenzie McDonald 7-5, 4-6, 7-5 in the Citi Open final at Washington. PETKOVIC WINS TITLE IN ROMANIA >> Germany’s Andrea Petkovic smashed Mayar Sherif of Egypt 6-1, 6-1 to win her first singles title in more than six years at the inaugural Winners Open in Cluj-Napoca, Romania.

LEGENDARY FLORIDA STATE COACH BOBBY BOWDEN DIES >> Bobby Bowden, the folksy Hall of Fame coach who won more than 350 games and built Florida State into one of college football’s great dynasties with two national titles has died. He was 91.

Bobby’s son, Terry, confirmed to The Associated Press that his father died at home surrounded by his family early Sunday morning.

Bobby Bowden announced on July 21 he had a terminal illness that his family later said was pancreatic cancer. He had been treated for prostate cancer more than a decade ago.

With charm and wit, Bowden piled up 357 wins during his 40 years as a major college coach, from tiny Samford — his alma mater, then known as Howard College — to West Virginia and finally at Florida State, where he went 315-98-4. The Seminoles were a force during his 34 seasons as coach, winning 12 Atlantic Coast Conference championsh­ips and national titles in 1993 and 1999.

Bowden retired following the 2009 season with a Gator Bowl win over West Virginia in Florida State’s 28th straight postseason appearance, a victory that gave him his 33rd consecutiv­e winning season.

HOWARD AGREES TO REWORKED CONTRACT WITH DOLPHINS >> All-Pro cornerback Xavien Howard agreed to a restructur­ed contract with the Miami Dolphins 12 days after he had requested a trade.

The agreement allows Howard to earn up to $3.5 million in new incentives this year, with more guaranteed money in 2022.

ANCER OF MEXICO WINS FEDEX ST JUDE INVITATION­AL >> Abraham Ancer of Mexico won the FedEx St. Jude Invitation­al for his first PGA Tour title, beating Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama and Sam Burns with a 6-foot birdie putt on the second playoff hole of a playoff.

Harris English, the leader after each of the first three rounds, faltered on the back nine to give Ancer, Burns and Matsuyama a chance. VAN ROOYEN WINS BARRACUDA CHAMPIONSH­IP >> Erik van Rooyen won the Barracuda Championsh­ip in Truckee for his first PGA Tour title, finishing with 50 points in the modified Stableford scoring system.

Van Rooyen, the 31-year-old former University of Minnesota player from South Africa, eagled the par-4 eighth and closed with a birdie on the par-4 18th for a five-point victory over Andrew Putnam at Tahoe Mountain Club’s Old Greenwood Course.

Van Rooyen had a 16-point final round, making the eagle, six birdies and a bogey.

LARSON WINS AT WATKINS GLEN FOR FIFTH VICTORY OF SEASON >> After a five-race absence, Kyle Larson returned to victory lane when he won the Go Bowling at the Glen NASCAR

Cup Series race at the Watkins Glen Internatio­nal road circuit in New York.

The victory was Larson’s fifth of the season and second on a road course as he won at Sonoma back in early June.

It was the Elk Grove native’s first win at the historic, seven-turn, 2.45mile Watkins Glen track.

Martin Truex Jr. finished third. Kyle Busch of JGR finished fourth while teammate Denny Hamlin was fifth.

ERICSSON SOARS TO MUSIC CITY GRAND PRIX WIN >> Marcus Ericsson soared over a car early, overcame hard-charging runs from Colton Herta and Scott Dixon late, and survived the perilous city streets of Nashville to win inaugural Music City Grand Prix.

Ericsson made the IndyCar highlight reel long before the checkered flag when he jumped the backside of Sebastien Bourdais’ Dixon was second to give Chip Ganassi Racing a 1-2 finish.

MESSI BIDS BARCA ADIEU, REPORTEDLY HEADED TO PARIS >> Lionel Messi held an emotional farewell press conference to say goodbye to his FC Barcelona teammates, coaches and fans.

The Argentine superstar said his next move is not confirmed, but ESPN reports that he’ll join Paris Saint-Germain on a two-year deal with an option for a third season.

SOURCE: MISSOURI HIRING FREMONT’S REED-FRANCOIS AS AD >> Missouri is hiring UNLV athletic director Desiree Reed-Francois of Fremont to be its next AD. A person with knowledge of the decision told The Associated Press the school is expected to make the move official soon.

Reed-Francois, who has been AD at UNLV since 2017, will replace Jim Sterk, who stepped down two weeks ago.

Reed-Francois, who has previously worked at Virginia Tech, Tennessee along with stints at Cal, San Jose State, Santa Clara and San Francisco, will become the second woman hired as an athletic director in the Southeaste­rn Conference.
