Dieter projects which players will make 49ers’ roster

Training camp is winding down and some obvious cuts have already been made.

Aug. 31 looms as cut day.

Who’s in, who’s out? Some picks are obvious — some require some real critical thinking.

And for the 49ers, who boast one of the most complete rosters in the NFL, there are going to be some tough decisions and the need for some serious roster trickery.

Let’s break it down:

QUARTERBACK (2): Jimmy Garoppolo, Trey Lance Cut: Nate Sudfeld

While I think the Niners would like to keep Sudfeld on the 53-man roster, for now, he’s going to be cut. It’ll save someone else’s job. I imagine that the Niners will keep Sudfeld’s number close.

OFFENSIVE LINE (8): Trent Williams, Laken Tomlinson, Alex Mack, Dan Brunskill, Mike McGlinchey, Aaron Banks, Jaylon Moore, Colton McKivitz

Cuts: Jake Brendel, Shon Coleman, Tom Compton, Dakota Shepley

It’s all straightforward. The Niners might want to keep Tom Compton on the 53-man roster, but frankly, they can just keep him posted up at the Hyatt if they need to bring him onto the roster — the Niners call this the Tom Savage.

I’ve really liked what I’ve seen from Brendel in training camp. I think the Niners will be able to get him to the practice squad, though. With the ability to call up two players a game from the practice squad, the Niners will opt to go that route with him. RUNNING BACK (5): Kyle Juszczyk, Raheem Mostert, Trey Sermon, JaMycal Hasty, Elijah Mitchell Cuts: Wayne Gallman, Josh Hokit

Gallman will be a short-lived cut, as the Niners will need to roster Mitchell to then put him on shortterm injured reserve. Gallman — a veteran who is not subject to waivers — will make a little extra cash for being a “free agent” for a day or two.

I’d expect all four running backs — Gallman included — to have a big role with this team. The notion of a Mostert-Sermon 1-2 punch seems to have faded with Sermon’s injury issues in camp. Instead, the Niners will have a four-headed monster with Mostert as the go-to option.

BTW, the Niners have to cut Hokit, but I wouldn’t be stunned if someone picks him up on waivers. More teams are running the Shanahan system, which means more teams need fullbacks. He’s a good one. WIDE RECEIVER (6): Brandon Aiyuk, Deebo Samuel, Mohamed Sanu, Trent Sherfield, Jauan Jennings, Jalen Hurd

Cuts: Travis Benjamin, Nsimba Webster, Richie James

Yes, Hurd is in. Why? Because no one has shown that he should take the No. 6 spot.

So why wouldn’t the Niners just keep Hurd on the roster for the purpose of moving him to injured reserve? Maybe he will be capable of playing come mid-season.

And surely they could bring back at least one of the three cut receivers, right?

Benjamin, Webster, and James all have a chance to change this in the next week, but given where we’re at now, why would anyone expect anything to change?

TIGHT END (4): George Kittle, Ross Dwelley, Charlie Woerner, MyCole Pruitt

Out: Jordan Matthews

Three no-brainers and the team’s blocking tight end. Matthews made a gallant effort — and he might end up a veteran on the Niners’ practice squad — but Woerner’s preseason emergence eliminated almost any chance of him making the team.

DEFENSIVE LINE (10): Nick Bosa, Arik Armstead, Dee Ford, Javon Kinlaw, D.J. Jones, Samson Ebukam, Maurice Hurst, Kentavious Street, Arden Key

Cuts: Kevin Givens, Darrion Daniels, Alex Barrett, Eddie Yarbrough

Givens is out. The Niners are hoping not for long. That might be tricky — Givens will hit waivers and another team would be smart to pick him up.

The Niners are shopping defensive linemen on the trade market right now to gauge if they can keep Givens or Arden Key. My sense is that there’s less of a market for defensive tackles than there is for defensive ends, so the Niners will go that route. Once Mo Hurst is put on injured reserve, Givens will be on the 53-man roster.

LINEBACKERS (5): Fred Warner, Dre Greenlaw, Azeez Al-Shaair, Jonas Griffith, Marcell Harris

Cuts: Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles, Elijah Sullivan, Justin Hilliard

It’s real easy keeping the best linebacker in the NFL, and Griffith has proven to be his backup in training camp.

The tricky spot is with the fifth linebacker spot. Harris has a small advantage because of special teams, in my opinion, but DFF can take his job if he outplays him in the final week of practice and preseason game No. 3 Sunday. This will be a fun one to keep an eye on for the next few days. CORNERBACK (6): Jason Verrett, Emmanuel Moseley, Deommodore Lenoir, Ambry Thomas, KWaun Williams Dontae Johnson

Cuts: Alexander Myres, Davontae Harris

The Niners might well acquire someone via trade at this position. I know they’ll be keeping a close eye on the waiver wire for possible additions as well.

Simply put, They don’t like having two rookies as backups on the outside and they certainly don’t feel comfortable with Dontae Johnson being such a critical player. If they can upgrade from the veteran, they will.

SAFETIES (4): Jimmie Ward, Tavon Wilson, Talanoa Hufanga, Jaquiski Tartt

Cuts: Jared Mayden, Kai Nacua, Ha Ha Clinton-Dix

Remember when the Niners used to have a bunch of safeties. Yeah. Those days are over.

I wanted to see more from Jared Maden, but alas, he’s heading to the practice squad. He should be a frequent gameday call-up, though.

SPECIAL TEAMS (3): Robbie Gould, Tabor Pepper, Mitch Wishnowsky

The Niners didn’t even bring in competition for these jobs. With the way Gould has kicked, that looks silly.
