TV Tips: ‘Murders,’ Rick James
Here are two series, a concert special and documentary TV viewers should know about.
“Only Murders in the Building”: Broad comedy blends with a juicy mystery and an intriguing trio of stars in this charming 10-episode series. Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez play residents of an upscale Manhattan apartment complex who share an obsession with true crime and suddenly find themselves wrapped up in one. When a neighbor’s death is declared a suicide by the police, they suspect foul play and decide to investigate — all while producing a podcast about their findings. The eclectic cast also includes Amy Ryan, Nathan Lane and Sting. Details: Available now; Hulu.
“CMA Summer Jam”: Toes will tap and heads will bop as the three-hour special comes our way. Some of country music’s biggest stars will perform, including Gabby Barrett, Dierks Bentley, Brothers Osborne, Luke Bryan, Florida Georgia Line, Mickey Guyton, Miranda Lambert, Blake Shelton, Carrie Underwood and more. Details: 8p.m. today; ABC.
“What We Do in the Shadows”: Brace yourselves for more supernatural shenanigans as the mockumentary comedy series returns for another completely batty season. In the opener, our sharp-toothed housemates are in a panic after discovering that Guillermo — yikes! — is a vampire killer. Details: 10 p.m. today; FX.
“Bitchin’: The Sound and Fury of Rick James”: This a raw and intimate look at the colorful life of the late funk artist who gave us hits such as “Superfreak,” “Give It to Me Baby” and “Mary Jane.” Included: Rare footage of James’ raucous live shows, home videos and interviews with collaborators and friends. Details: 9 p.m. Friday; Showtime.
