Senior housing project eyed near train station
Development would add more than 100 affordable units for elderly residents
SAN JOSE >> A big new development of affordable homes, this time for seniors, is being eyed at a choice site a short distance from a train station in San Jose.
The project would sprout at 390 Floyd St. next to Lick Avenue and across the street from Tamien Station, according to San Jose city planning documents.
An estimated 134 dwelling units would be built on the site, which is slightly below a halfacre in size, the public documents show.
“New construction of a 100% affordable senior housing development” is contemplated on the property, according to the proposal. The development would be seven stories high when it is completed.
The project’s description was part of a preliminary proposal that was submitted to municipal planners.
The early-stage proposal is being floated at San Jose City Hall as a way to obtain a sense of how local leaders and administrators might react to the concept.
The Tamien Station can be a busy transit site since it serves both the local light rail system and the regional Caltrain line. It’s also a few rail stops away from the bustling Diridon transit station in downtown San Jose.
The project shows plans for a courtyard or gathering area. Retail components aren’t shown on the plan sets this news organization obtained.
The project applicant is affiliated with commercial property lending firms based in the Orange
County city of Newport Beach, county records show.
The developer of the site is seeking an expedited approval process from the city of San Jose and hopes to receive administrative approval for the project.
More housing is being planned in the vicinity of this property.
Several hundred residential units have been pitched by developers on locations nearby that would also be close to the Tamien Station.
