Student at Homestead High arrested after gun brought to campus
CUPERTINO >> A student brought a gun to Homestead High School on Tuesday, resulting in an arrest and further police presence around the school, according to authorities and school officials.
The Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office said it responded to a report of a student with a gun at Homestead on Tuesday about 10:45 a.m.
An “unserialized, semiautomatic firearm” was recovered from a student, who was arrested and booked into Santa Clara County Juvenile Hall, authorities said.
Officials said the student’s name won’t be released because he’s a minor. No one was hurt in the incident, according to authorities.
Polly Bove, superintendent of the Fremont Union High School District, confirmed the incident to the parents and families of students Tuesday.
“We understand that any situation where a weapon is found on a student will naturally cause concern and anxiety. We want to reassure you that there is no current threat to the safety of our school or district community,” Bove said in an email.
Law enforcement will be on Homestead campus “to ensure that all students and staff feel comfortable returning to school,” Bove said, adding that the school’s mental health resources are also available to staffers and students.
“We also want to commend the community member that came forward to trusted adults on campus with critical information and whose quick thinking helped ensure the safety of all students and staff. It is an important reminder to everyone in our school community that if you see or hear something, say something,” Bove said.
Homestead High School has returned for in-person instruction for the fall 2021 semester, according to Greg Giglio, principal of the school.
