Yankees put end to Red Sox win streak

Giancarlo Stanton blew the game open early with a three-run home run, and the New York Yankees held on to beat the host Red Sox 8-3 in the opener of a pivotal three-game series Friday and stop Boston’s seven-game winning streak.

Stanton had three hits and four RBIs as the Yankees (87-67) won their fourth straight to get within a game of the Red Sox (88-66) for the top wild-card spot in the AL. Gleyber Torres (3 for 5) added a solo homer for New York. WHITE SOX 1, INDIANS 0 >> Chicago starter Dylan Cease left after being struck on the right arm by a comebacker in the sixth inning as the visiting White Sox beat Cleveland in Indians ace Shane Bieber’s return. The White Sox said Cease has a right triceps contusion and that X-rays were negative.

PADRES 6, BRAVES 5 >> Fernando Tatis Jr. homered leading off the top of the seventh and the Padres beat the NL East-leading Braves in San Diego in the resumption of a game that was suspended due to rain in Atlanta on July 21. CARDINALS 8, CUBS 5 >> St. Louis soared to its 13th straight win, using homers by Paul Goldschmid­t and Tyler O’Neill to top the Cubs 8-5 in the opener of a doublehead­er in Chicago. It’s the longest win streak for St. Louis since it set a team record with 14 in a row in 1935. NOTES >> Toronto reliever Ryan Borucki had his suspension for plunking Tampa Bay outfielder Kevin Kiermaier reduced to two games after an appeal and began serving the ban Friday. Borucki was suspended three games and fined an undisclose­d amount by MLB on Thursday. ... Rays rookie Wander Franco was reinstated from the 10-day injured list after missing two weeks with a right hamstring injury.
