‘Hamilton’ charges into San Jose
Technically speaking, “Hamilton” didn’t change in the 18 or so months that theaters were shut down due to the pandemic. It’s still the same blockbuster musical that millions of fans have adored for years.
Talk to some of the performers, however, and they might sing a different tune about what it’s like to be in “Hamilton” now that theaters have reopened.
“It’s the same material. It’s the same show. But we are all very different,” says Marja Harmon, who plays Angelica Schuyler in the acclaimed musical. “And how the lyrics hit now — singing ‘Look around at how lucky we are to be alive right now.’ Everything just feels different, and there’s just so much appreciation and gratitude to be able to be in a group and make noise and sing with each other.”
“Hamilton” next week begins a threeweek
engagement at the Center for the Performing Arts in San Jose, running Tuesday-Oct. 31. It marks the San Jose premiere of the Broadway blockbuster, which has already enjoyed two lengthy residencies in San Francisco. (The second S.F. residency ended up broken into two parts — separated by 1½ years due to the pandemic.)
“Hamilton” opens Broadway San Jose’s 2021-22season. Other shows on tap include “Hairspray,” “Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” “Tootsie,” “Dear Evan Hansen” and “1776.”
