Series history: Stanford has won 10 of the past 13 games against the Huskies, including wins against ranked Washington teams in each of the past two seasons, and leads the all-time series 44-43-4. Storylines: Both teams look to get back to .500 after disappointing starts. Washington was ranked 20th in the preseason, but has a losing record thanks to an inept offense. Stanford has faced tougher competition but hasn’t been able to generate a running game or stop anyone (the Cardinal are last in the Pac-12 in total defense). … Whichever team loses will have a tough path to bowl eligibility. Stanford still has to face No. 11 Notre Dame, while Washington’s next game is against No. 7 Oregon. Matchup to watch: Stanford running game vs. Washington rush defense. The Cardinal is last in the Pac-12 at 94.3 rushing yards a game, but Washington is 11th in rushing defense (194.4), behind only Stanford (202.7). The Cardinal has struggled running for a few seasons, but has turned it up against the Huskies to pull off backto-back upsets — 191 yards on the ground in last year’s 31-26 win, and 189 yards in a 23-13 win in 2019. Injuries/Absences: RB E.J. Smith, TE/DL Tucker Fisk and LB Tristan Sinclair are probable for the game, while S Noah Williams and WR John Humphreys are questionable and TE Bradley Archer and PR Casey Filkins are out. Top WR Michael Wilson may make his season debut in a limited role.

Stats that matter: Washington hasn’t won at Stanford since 2007. … Washington’s last four games have all been decided by seven points or fewer. … Stanford is 3-0 this season when rushing for 100 or more yards, and 0-4 when held to less than 100 rushing yards. … Stanford sophomore QB Tanner McKee has 6 TDs and 0 INT in his two career home games. … Along with LSU and TCU, Washington is one of just three teams in the FBS that has scored in every red-zone opportunity this season. It has 14 TDs and five field goals.
