Metallica celebrates Metallica

- — Jim Harrington, Staff

Metallica is set to celebrate its 40th anniversary in grand style. The bestselling Bay Area band of all time is hosting four days of concerts, curated live shows and other events in San Francisco tonight through Sunday.

The two biggest events of the Metallica San Francisco Takeover calendar will happen when the multiplatinum band headlines the Chase Center in San Francisco for two nights — Friday and Sunday. Both of those shows are already sold out, but will be streamed free via the Coda Collection, the popular music channel on Amazon Prime. The stream can be accessed through Amazon Music, Amazon Music’s Twitch channel and Prime Video (with or without Prime on-demand viewing membership). The streams begin at 9 each night.

The festivities begin when Metallica pals White Reaper — who appeared on the group’s recent tribute album, “Blacklist” — performs at August Hall tonight. Taipei Houston is also on the bill. Showtime is 8:30 p.m. and tickets are $25; augusthallsf.com.

Friday brings the really cool tripleheader of Goodnight, Texas, Bastardane and headliner the Wedding Band, featuring Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett and bassist Robert Trujillo, to the Fillmore. Obviously, the Wedding Band will take the stage on the late side — after Hammett and Trujillo finish up playing with their other band at Chase Center that same night. Showtime is 10 p.m. and tickets are $39.50; livenation.com.

There is a bunch of cool shows and such on Saturday, including saxophonist Kamasi Washington (another artist who contributed to “Blacklist”) at August Hall. Showtime is 9 p.m. and tickets are $55.

Other Metallica events on Saturday include a film festival at the AMC Kabuki 8 and appearances by photographer Ross Halfin (who recently released the “Metallica: The Black Album in Black & White” photo book) at various venues in San Francisco.
