Flyers’ Yandle set to break Iron Man mark

-

Through busted teeth, injuries, slumps and new teams, Keith Yandle has played and played and played some more.

So much so that tonight the Philadelphia Flyers defenseman will tie retired center Doug Jarvis today for the NHL record for consecutive games played with 964. Yandle can set the record on the road Tuesday against the New York Islanders.

Jarvis played 964 straight games over his entire career from Oct. 8, 1975, to Oct. 10, 1987, with Montreal, Washington and Hartford. He never played a game outside the streak.

The 35-year-old Yandle started his streak March 26, 2009, with Phoenix and he has played 1,073 games with the Coyotes, New York Rangers and Florida Panthers.

“It’s kind of the way hockey players are built. You kind of try to play through as much pain as you can,” Yandle said Sunday. “There’s been some times I’ve not felt great. It was tough sledding. But it’s one of those things where you just try to battle through it and help out your team.”

KINGS 3, DEVILS 2 >> Carl Grundstrom scored the tiebreaking goal midway through the third period and Cal Petersen made 23 saves to lift Los Angeles over New Jersey.

Alex Iafallo and Viktor Arvidsson also scored for the Kings, who snapped a threegame losing streak to start a six-game trip.

SENATORS 2, BLUE JACKETS 1 >> Anton Forsberg stopped 35 shots as Ottawa snapped a three-game losing streak.

Artem Zub and Tim Stützle scored for the Senators.

PENGUINS 3, JETS 2, SO >> Kasperi Kapanen and Jeff Carter scored nine seconds apart in the third period to erase a two-goal deficit and Sidney Crosby scored the only goal of the shootout to lead Pittsburgh past Winnipeg Jets.

The Penguins trailed for more than 40 minutes after falling behind early in the first but recovered late to extend their winning streak to five.
