Quakes still searching for first win

The Eathquakes' winless start to the season continued on Saturday in a 2-0 road loss to the Philadelph­ia Union.

San Jose (0-2-1, 1 point) has been outscored 5-1 in its two losses. The other result was a 3-3 tie against Columbus.

The Union (2-0-1, 7 points) outshot the Earthquake­s 11-7 with a 6-1 advantage in shots on goal.

JT Marcinkows­ki had four saves for the Earthquake­s, who play at the Minnesota United FC on Saturday.

In other MLS matches: Xavier Arreaga scored the deciding goal on a header in the 72nd minute, sending the Seattle Sounders past the LA Galaxy 3-2. Stanford product Jordan Morris also scored to help the Sounders (1-20) pick up their first three points of the season and hand the Galaxy (2-1-0) its first loss . ... Kwadwo Opoku scored late in the first half and Ismael Tajouri-Shradi added an insurance goal in the second half to propel Los Angeles FC to a 2-0 victory over Inter Miami FC. RONALDO BREAKS GOAL RECORD >> Manchester United superstar Cristiano Ronaldo scored his 806th career goal in Old Trafford, breaking FIFA's all-time record for most goals in competitiv­e matches in men's football history.

It was the second of three goals the Portuguese attacker scored during the game, leading United to a 3-2 victory over Tottenham and finishing the day with 807 total career goals. The previous FIFA goal record was held by Josef Bican, with 805 goals.

Saturday marked Ronaldo's second career hat-trick in the English Premier League and the 59th of his career. Ronaldo, 37, holds the all-time records for most Champions League goals (140) and most internatio­nal goals in men's world football (115).

Hamlin is a two-time Phoenix winner, taking the trophy in 2012 and 2019 -and he has top-five finishes in five of the last six races there. Three times he's led at least 100 laps in a race and his 854 laps led is second only to nine-time race winner Kevin Harvick.

Harvick, a nine-time Phoenix winner, will start 16th. Defending race winner Martin Truex Jr. will roll off 20th.

Iditarod

SASS STILL THE LEADER

PAST MIDWAY POINT >> Musher Brent Sass is maintainin­g his lead in the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race and was the first to arrive at the checkpoint in Kaltag early Saturday.

Kaltag is 629 miles (1,012 kilometers) into the nearly 1,000-mile (1,609-kilometer) trek across the Alaska wilderness. The winner is expected in Nome early to mid-week.

Five-time champion Dallas Seavey remained in second place.

The Iditarod started March 6 north of Anchorage for 49 mushers; since then, four have scratched. Among those was Hugh Neff, who was in third place Friday.

Tennis

MEDVEDEV, NADAL ADVANCE >> Daniil Medvedev beat Tomas Machac 6-3, 6-2 in the second round of the BNP Paribas Open, the Russian's first tournament since ascending to No. 1 in the world.

Rafael Nadal didn't have it as easy in opening his pursuit of a fourth title at Indian Wells. He got pushed to the limit by practice partner Sebastian Korda before winning 6-2, 1-6, 7-6 (3), giving Nadal a 16-0 record this year.

Other seeded men's winners were: No. 8 Casper Ruud, defending champion Cameron Norrie, No. 15 Roberto Bautista Agut, No. 17 Reilly Opelka and No. 19 Carlos Alcaraz.

In women's play, Jasmine Paolini upset secondseed­ed Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 in the second round for the Italian's first career win over a top-10 player. Sabalenka fired eight aces to go with 10 double faults.

CANADA TOPS U.S. IN OLYMPIC REMATCH >> An Olympic gold medal wasn't on the line this time for MariePhili­p Poulin, who added another clutch goal against the United States by scoring 2:13 into overtime in Canada's 4-3 win in a “Rivalry Rematch” on Saturday in Pittsburgh. Three weeks ago, Poulin scored the final two goals in Canada's 3-2 gold-medal win over the Americans at the Beijing Games.
