Quakes rally for thrilling home draw

-

Jeremy Ebobisse and Cade Cowell scored goals in rapid succession as the Earthquakes rallied for a 2-2 draw with Austin FC on Saturday at PayPal Park.

The outcome left the Quakes (0-3-2), still winless for the young season, feeling energized after a lackluster start this season.

Max Urruti got Austin FC on the board in the 11th minute.

Just five minutes after play resumed, Jackson Yueill was whistled for a penalty on Dani Pereira. Sebastian Driussi converted the penalty kick to make it 2-0.

But the Earthquakes halved the deficit on an Ebobisse PK in the 70th minute. Then, two minutes later on a corner kick, Cowell battled for the tying goal.

Golf FOUR SHARE VALERO LEAD >>

Brandt Snedeker and Beau Hossler each shot rounds of 5-under 67 to join J.J. Spaun and Dylan Frittelli atop the leaderboard after the third round of the Valero Texas Open on Saturday.

Both Spaun, who shot 69, and Frittelli (70) finished with a share of the lead at 10-under 206.

A final-hole bogey kept Scott Stallings out of the lead. He also shot 65 and was a shot back at 9-under. Matt Kuchar's bogey at 18 dropped him to 8-under after an even-par round.

Spaun birdied four of his five holes heading to the 18th to take a one-shot lead. At the 17th he drove the green at the 303-yard par-4 and almost made the 19-foot eagle. However, he pushed his tee shot on 18 into the trees, punched out, then laid up short of the stream that guards the final green. He ended up with a 22-foot putt for par that he missed.

“If you told me this Tuesday like, `Hey, you're going to be tied for the lead going into Sunday,' I would totally take it,” Spaun said. “Yeah, bogey on the last hole, but I think it could have been worse. So I'm not too bummed out about that.”

With a bogey-free round, Snedeker was 4-under on the backside. He is looking for his first win since 2018. It would be his 10th tour victory.

YOUNG DAVIS TAKES AUGUSTA AMATEUR >> Anna Davis didn't know many of the players when the 16-year-old arrived for her first Augusta National Women's Amateur. They all know who she is now.

Davis got into the mix with two birdies around Amen Corner, closed with a 3-under 69 and took the title Saturday when Latanna Stone collapsed over the final two holes at Augusta National.

Stone, a junior at LSU, appeared to have the tournament in hand when she hit the ridge on the par-3 16th and watched her golf ball trickle down to 2 feet for her sixth birdie of the round, giving her a twoshot lead with two holes to play.

• Steven Alker shot a tournament-record 10-under 62 to take a one-stroke lead over Bob Estes (64) after the second round of the Rapiscan Systems Classic in Biloxi, Miss.

Iga Swiatek ended her journey to the women's No. 1 ranking in fitting fashion.

Swiatek continued her searing start to 2022, beating Naomi Osaka 6-4, 6-0 to win the women's title at the Miami Open and extend her winning streak to 17 matches.

Swiatek, who will replace the now-retired Ashleigh Barty at No. 1 in the women's rankings officially when the points are updated Monday, also completed the so-called Sunshine Double — winning both Indian Wells and Miami. She's the fourth woman to do so, joining Victoria Azarenka (2016), Kim Clijsters (2005) and Steffi Graf (1994 and 1996).

“This tournament has so much energy,” Swiatek said.

Osaka came into the tournament ranked No. 77 in the world, though certainly didn't play like there are 76 better women out there on tour right now.

• U.S. Open champion Daniil Medvedev expects to be sidelined for one to two months after having hernia surgery.

The No. 2-ranked man in tennis wrote on Twitter that he has been dealing with “a small hernia” in recent months.

BLANEY EARNS ANOTHER POLE AT RICHMOND >> Ryan Blaney is on a roll running for poles.

The Team Penske driver turned a lap of 119.782 mph at Richmond Raceway to earn his third consecutive top starting spot in NASCAR's top series. It's the ninth pole for Blaney in 241 career starts, and his third this season.

William Byron will start on the outside of the front row, with Kyle Busch and Chase Briscoe in the second row, and Erik Jones and Martin Truex Jr. next. Kevin Harvick, Ross Chastain, Christopher Bell and Aric Almirola complete the top 10.

Blaney is second in the driver standings behind Chase Elliott, and Blaney's Team Penske teammate Joey Logano is third.

* Ty Gibbs admittedly intended to nudge John Hunter Nemechek from the lead in a furious lastlap battle with a victory within his grasp at Richmond Raceway.

He said he just didn't mean to hit him so hard.

“I was going to have to hit him. I definitely, if I could go back, I would have not have drove in as hard and hit him as hard to knock him way up the track,” the rising star said after his third Xfinity Series victory of the season.

In a stirring duel for the victory, the Joe Gibbs Racing teammates got physical over the final several laps, trading the lead and making contact several times until Gibbs nudged Nemechek's Toyota in turn three of the last lap.

He won by just 0.116 seconds.
