- By The Associated Press

Chicago Cubs reliever Keegan Thompson was suspended three games on Monday for hitting Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Andrew McCutchen with a pitch.

Cubs manager David Ross was suspended one game by Major League Baseball. Thompson and Ross also were fined an undisclosed amount.

Ross will serve his suspension today at Pittsburgh.

Thompson hit McCutchen in the eighth inning of Chicago’s 9-0 win at Wrigley Field on Saturday. The benches cleared and the teams exchanged words but no punches were thrown.

McCutchen was the first Brewer and fourth of five players hit overall in the game. Thompson, who was ejected for the first time in his career, said the pitch got away from him.

Mets’ Walker exits early

New York Mets pitcher Taijuan Walker left his start Monday night at Philadelphia after two innings because of right shoulder irritation.

Walker will get an MRI today.

Red Sox’s Story sits out again because of illness

Boston Red Sox second baseman Trevor Story missed his second straight game Monday because of flu-like symptoms.

The Red Sox opened a threegame series against the Tigers, and manager Alex Cora told MLB Network Radio that Story traveled to Detroit apart from the team.

Story tested negative for COVID-19 on Sunday.

He was the big offseason acquisition for the Red Sox, signing a sixyear, $140 million contract.

Toronto Blue Jays catcher Danny Jansen was put on the 10day injured list with a strained left oblique muscle.

Blue Jays manager Charlie Montoyo said before a series opener at Yankee Stadium that Jansen felt soreness in his side while swinging and was having a scan. Shortly before the first pitch, the Blue Jays placed Jansen on the IL.

Jansen was 4 for 7 with two home runs in the opening series against Texas.

• The Washington Nationals placed right-handed pitcher Anibal Sanchez, who was slated to start Monday, on the 10-day injured list with a cervical nerve impingement.

Sanchez, 38, spent the 2021 season out of baseball and re-signed with Nationals in March. He was a starter on the 2019 Washington team that won the World Series and also spent 2020 with the team.

In 15 MLB seasons with four teams, Sanchez is 112-113 with a 4.05 ERA in 350 games (327 starts).

In two seasons with the Nationals, he posted a 15-13 record.
