Mountain View stuns Palo Alto in rematch

The Mountain View baseball team had lost seven of its previous 10 games, the latest a pounding by Palo Alto earlier in the week.

Palo Alto was not only undefeated in league play, but the Vikings had outscored their nine league opponents 81-8.

So much for that script. Friday, Mountain View scored two in the home half of the third to break a tie and seven in the fourth to bust open the game on its way to a stunning 12-5 victory over Santa Clara Valley Athletic League De Anza Division-leading Palo Alto.

Billy Peir had three hits, Chase Yocum homered and knocked in two runs and Shota Fletcher had two RBIs to lead the Spartans, who improved to 12-10 overall and 4-6 in the league.

Palo Alto, ranked third by the Bay Area News Group, fell to 184, 9-1.

Two days after routing Mountain View 11-1, Palo Alto took a 2-0 lead in the first inning. From there, Mountain View scored the next 12 runs.

Charlie Bates went 4 for 4 and scored a run and Henry Bolte hit his ninth home run this season for Palo Alto.

NO. 1 ST. FRANCIS 7, WASHINGTON­FREMONT 0 >> Tristan Kim pitched five hitless innings with eight strikeouts and Derek Gile hit a three-run triple in the first to lead St. Francis to a non-league victory at home over Washington-Fremont. Kyler Bittner had two hits for St. Francis (19-2). Washington, which finished with one hit, fell to 6-10.

NO. 2 DE LA SALLE 8, AMADOR VALLEY 2 >> Connor Harrison and Donovan Chriss each had three hits and Eli Gennis struck out eight in 5 ⅔ innings to lift De La Salle over host Amador Valley in East Bay Athletic League play. De La Salle improved to 15-3, 7-1. Riley Doster drove in two runs for Amador Valley (6-14, 1-8).

NO. 4 VALLEY CHRISTIAN 3, LELAND 2 (8 INNINGS) >> Jordan Ortiz's twoout single in the bottom of the eighth knocked in the winning run, lifting Valley Christian to a non-league victory over Leland. Alec Belardes and Jacob Hudson each struck out five for the Warriors (16-4-1). Cody Hardtke and Matt Elo had two hits apiece for Leland (6-11).

NO. 6 FOOTHILL 10, LIVERMORE 3 >> Trailing 3-1 in the second, Foothill responded with three runs in its half of that frame and never looked back en route to an EBAL victory over Livermore. Evan Bilter went 5 for 5 with two doubles and two RBIs for Foothill (17-2, 7-1). Jackson

Nystrom homered and doubled and Mateo Bullis had two hits, including a double for Livermore (8-12, 2-7).

NO. 8 CLAYTON VALLEY 4, NORTHGATE 3 >> Clayton Valley scored two in the fifth and one in the sixth to overcome a 3-1 deficit and beat host Northgate in a Diablo Athletic League Foothill Division game. Carl Rice had three hits to lead Clayton Valley (14-4, 6-2). Keone Takahashi homered and drove in two runs for Northgate (7-12, 2-6).

NO. 9 SAN RAMON VALLEY 5, DOUGHERTY VALLEY 1 >> San Ramon Valley took command with three runs in the first and one in the second to beat host Dougherty Valley in EBAL play. Ruben Rivera allowed one unearned run in six innings with seven strikeouts for the Wolves (13-6, 7-2). Brayden Braga and Cody Williams each had two hits for Dougherty Valley (13-7, 2-7).

SEQUOIA 3, NO. 12 ARAGON 1 >> Dillon Goetz struck out nine in six innings, homered and had two RBIs as Sequoia completed a two-game sweep of Aragon with a victory at home in Peninsula Athletic League Bay Division play. Max Stalllings also had an RBI for Sequoia (7-9-1, 5-3). Aragon fell to 13-5, 4-4.

NO. 13 BRANHAM 10, WILLOW GLEN 3>> Branham scored five runs in the first inning and won at Willow Glen in Blossom Valley Athletic League Mt. Hamilton Division play for its eighth consecutiv­e victory. Tyler Siegel and Keaton Cooper each hit a home run for the Bruins (16-4, 7-1). Vinny Mollo had a hit and knocked in two runs for Willow Glen (11-8-1, 1-7).

LIVE OAK 10, NO. 16 LEIGH 7 (10 INNINGS) >> Live Oak scored three runs in the visiting half of the 10th inning to finish off a twogame sweep of Leigh in BVAL Mt. Hamilton play. Tyler Klopp had two hits, including a homer, and three RBIs for Live Oak (13-7, 6-2). Leigh is 14-7, 4-4.

Softball

NO. 12 SANTA TERESA 4, WESTMONT 3 >> Haley Saole had a hit and knocked in three runs and Isabella De Filippis had an RBI – all in the home half of the second inning – as Santa Teresa edged Westmont in a Blossom Valley Athletic League Mt. Hamilton Division game. Jacqui McLean finished with three hits and Brianna Chambers-Lee had two RBIs for Westmont (11-8, 4-3). Santa Teresa improved to 17-4, 7-1.

NO. 16 BRANHAM 3, LIVE OAK 0 >> Branham broke a scoreless tie with a run in the fifth and added two in the sixth to win at home over Live Oak in BVAL Mt. Hamilton play. Emma Fales pitched a five-hitter with nine strikeouts for Branham (16-5, 5-3). Live Oak is 9-8, 3-4.
