HIP, BOUTIQUE CAMPFIRE HOTEL — A WARM, COZY SPOT IN BEND

- By Jessica Yadegaran jyadegaran@bayareanewsgroup.com

The owners of Bend's woodsy-chic Dogwood Cocktail Cabin have turned a midcentury motel on strip mall-heavy Third Street into a hip boutique base camp, complete with twinkle-lit trees and a cocktail lounge, Canteen.

The Campfire Hotel, which opened in late 2020, features 100 renovated, vintage camp-inspired guest rooms, a heated saltwater pool, outdoor fire pit and a lodge-like lobby where you can pick up s'mores kits and other must-haves. Forgot your guitar? Borrow the Breedlove hanging in your room and start a singalong.

ROOMS >> The hotel has a variety of sleeping options, including king, double queen and bunk beds and a two-bedroom suite. Our double queen, designed in dark brown leather with pops of orange, had all the amenities you expect in a modern guest room — full bath, free Wi-Fi, 55-inch flatscreen TV, complimentary, locally roasted pour-over coffee — with charming retro touches, like a vintage radio with modern hookups. Outdoor inspiration was everywhere, from the lantern-like lighting to the wall-sized, sepia-toned photo of bygone Oregon lumberjacks.

ZZZ'S >> Our beds were super cozy, which was essential after a day of fly-fishing on the Crooked River and another spent exploring a lava tube cave. We melted beneath the Euro-style linens and wanted to take home the poofy, nylon-style orange throws fashioned from sleeping bags. SPLASHES >> A 900-square-foot, heated swimming pool (and its accompanying hot tub) were the social hub during our stay, before like-minded fellow guests headed out to dinner and reconvened later around the fire pit. Kiddos young and old splashed and belly-flopped, while adults sipped local beer, cider or kombucha available in cans in the lobby.

EXTRAS >> That cocktail lounge. Canteen serves 15 innovative craft cocktails with names like Sexy Thyme and Thai One On and globally inspired sandwiches. Sip and stumble home. Open from 4 to 11 p.m. Tuesday-Sunday for ages 21 and over. DETAILS >> Rooms start at $149 per night. 721 NE Third St. Bend; www.campfire hotel.com.
