City seeks public input on east side park design

City officials are seeking community input on the design of a new park on Cupertino's east side, where parkland is sparse.

The new park is set for a 7.83-acre site known as Lawrence-Mitty, located west of the Lawrence Expressway and to the east of Saratoga Creek. The city acquired the site from the county in September 2020 and has since been coordinating with the Local Area Formation Commission (LAFCO), the City of San Jose and other service providers to annex the property into Cupertino. LAFCO's board of directors approved the annexation of the property into Cupertino on April 6.

The property is adjacent to Sterling Barnhart Park in Cupertino, which leads to Saratoga Creek Trail heads. The city intends to develop this site as a park and extend the San Tomas Aquino-Saratoga Creek Trail.

The city began discussing the acquisition and development of the property five years ago, initially budgeting $8.27 million with funds from the Apple Park project.

This project is currently in the design phase, and the city is asking potential park users to help shape the concept plans. A virtual community meeting is set for Wednesday, April 27, 6-7:30 p.m., followed by a tour of the Lawrence-Mitty site on Saturday, April 30, 10 a.m.noon.

There will be a project booth at Saturday Soccer at Creekside Park on Saturday, May 7, 11 a.m.-1 p.m., where residents can share their ideas about the park's design.

A survey on the project is open through Monday, May 23, at 5 p.m., at engagecupertino.org/lawrencemitty, where residents can also register for the virtual meeting and get more information about the tour.
