Scott and Laci Peterson's Modesto house sells for $50,000 over list price

- By David Caraccio

The former Modesto home of Scott and Laci Peterson has sold for $50,000 over the listing price after being on the market for less than a month, according to realtor.com.

The couple lived in the house at 523 Covena Ave. when prosecutors say Scott Peterson killed his wife and their unborn son on or just before Christmas Eve in 2002. Defense attorneys have suggested that burglars operating in the area at the time or others were responsible. Scott Peterson was convicted in the murders and sentenced to death.

The murder case has been back in the news recently. The California Supreme Court overturned Scott Peterson's death sentence in 2020. In a separate proceeding, the case has been returned to San Mateo County court, where it was tried, to determine if Peterson should get a new trial over allegations a juror lied to get on the case. The next hearing in that matter is set for June.

The three-bedroom, two-bath home at 523 Covena Ave. in Modesto was listed for $459,888 on March 30 and sold for $510,000 on April 21.

There was no mention of the infamous case on the property listing. The home was the scene of a media frenzy when news of the killings surfaced. The home was remodeled and upgraded since images of the property emerged after the killings.

“If fun in the sun and entertaining poolside are on your list of must-haves, this is the home you've been looking for,” according to the listing, which noted the property was”move-in ready.”

The listing agent, Cindy Hackett of Open House Real Estate, could not be immediately reached for comment.

The house spans 1,770 square feet with three bedrooms and two bathrooms. The home features stone countertops and tile backsplashes in a remodeled kitchen with a six-burner gas stove and built-in wine rack.

In the front, there's a secluded courtyard with flowers, grass and bushes.

In the backyard, there's a pool “and just around the corner is the relaxing hot tub for soaking and enjoying star-lit nights,” the listing states.
