Torres leads Yankees to 10th win in a row
Gleyber Torres homered early, then hit a go-ahead single in the ninth inning as the New York Yankees won their 10th straight game, beating the host Toronto Blue Jays 3-2 Monday night.
Giancarlo Stanton singled off Yimi Garcia (0-2) to begin the New York ninth, ending a streak of four perfect innings by Blue Jays relievers. Pinch-runner Tim Locastro stole second and after a groundout and strikeout, Torres lined a single to center field.
Torres opened the scoring with a two-out, two-run drive off Ross Stripling in the fourth.
The Yankees won for the 12th time in 13 games.
Yankees left-hander Jordan Montgomery gave up two runs and six hits in five-plus innings. He walked none and struck out five. BRAVES 5, METS 2 >> Austin Riley homered, Max Fried won his third straight outing and visiting Atlanta cooled off New York.
Travis d’Arnaud had three hits and three RBIs against his former team. Fried (3-2) settled in after a rocky start, outpitching Chris Bassitt.
Mark Canha hit his first home run for the division-leading Mets (16-8), who played without manager Buck Showalter. He was suspended for one game about 20 minutes before the first pitch after Major League Baseball determined New York reliever Yoan López intentionally threw at Philadelphia slugger Kyle Schwarber the previous night.
López, optioned to Triple-A Syracuse following Sunday’s victory, received a three-game ban.
Adam Duvall’s sacrifice fly gave Atlanta a 3-2 lead, and d’Arnaud added a two-run double off reliever Trevor May in the eighth.
Fried went six innings, allowing two runs and four hits. The left-hander struck out six and walked none.
Bassitt (3-2) gave up three runs and six hits in seven innings. He struck out eight and walked one. TWINS 2, ORIOLES 1 >> Chris Paddack pitched effectively into the sixth, and Carlos Correa hit a tiebreaking single that same inning to lift Minnesota to its 10th win in 11 games, a road victory over Baltimore.
Paddack (1-2) allowed a run and four hits in 5 1/3 innings. The righthander left with men on first and third and one out. Joe Smith got Ryan Mountcastle to bounce into a double play that kept the Twins up 2-1. ASTROS 3, MARINERS 0 >> Yordan Alvarez hit a solo homer and Jeremy Peña added a two-run shot to back up a solid start from Jake Odorizzi and help host Houston top Seattle.
Odorizzi (2-2) allowed four hits in 6 2/3 scoreless innings.
The victory moved manager Dusty Baker within one win of becoming the 12th manager in MLB history to reach 2,000. CARDINALS 1, ROYALS 0 >> Paul Goldschmidt hit a first-inning early home run and Steven Matz and the made it stand up, leading St. Louis over visiting Kansas City, which lost its fourth in a row.
Goldschmidt connected against Zack Greinke (0-2), who gave up three hits in six innings.
Matz (3-1) scattered four hits in six innings. He walked none, hit a batter and struck out four. DIAMONDBACKS 5, MARLINS 4 >> Zac Gallen outpitched Pablo López as Arizona held on to win at Miami.
David Peralta homered, singled twice and drove in three runs, and Daulton Varsho hit two doubles for the Diamondbacks, who have won five of seven. Arizona’s Jordan Luplow had two hits and two RBIs.
In a matchup of starters who entered with ERAs under one, Gallen (1-0) threw 6 1/3 innings of two-run ball. He allowed five hits, struck out six and hit two batters.
López’s string of 18 2/3 scoreless innings ended in the first on Peralta’s two-run homer.
The Diamondbacks chased López (3-1) after two-out RBI singles by Luplow and Peralta in the fifth that made it 4-0.
López allowed four runs, six hits, walked two and struck out seven. His ERA rose from 0.39 to 1.61. RAYS 6, ATHLETICS 1>> Yandy Díaz led off the game with a home run to back right-hander Drew Rassmussen, and Tampa Bay used a balanced offense to win at Oakland.
Wander Franco, who had two RBIs, and Randy Arozarena hit consecutive RBI singles in the third off Daulton Jefferies (1-4), who allowed 11 hits and six runs in five innings.
Rasmussen (2-1) allowed one run and one hit, struck out three and walked one in five innings.
