Three HRs lead Astros to their 11th straight win

Jose Altuve homered on the first pitch of the game, and Yordan Alvarez and Yuli Gurriel also went deep to help the Houston Astros extend their winning streak to 11 games with a 6-1 rout of the Washington Nationals on Friday night.

Houston manager Dusty Baker, who led Washington to consecutiv­e NL East titles in 2016 and '17, won in his first game back at Nationals Park since he was fired after two seasons.

Framber Valdez (2-2) allowed one run over 7 2/3 innings to earn his first victory since April 7 and help extend the Astros' pitching dominance. Houston has allowed just 12 runs during its streak with an 0.91 ERA in that stretch.

Washington has lost seven of its last nine and is 4-14 at home.

REDS 8, PIRATES 2 >> Mike Moustakas homered twice and Brandon Drury drove in four runs to lead Cincinnati past host Pittsburgh,

Moustakas hit a solo shot in the fourth inning to break a 2-2 tie. In the seventh, he had another solo homer to make it 8-2, two batters after Drury had a two-run drive.

The Reds won for the sixth time in eight games following a 3-22 start.

BREWERS 2, MARLINS 1 >> Jace Peterson walked against Anthony Bender with the bases loaded in the ninth inning to break a 1-1 tie and lift visiting Milwaukee past Miami.

NO CANCER FOR MELVIN >> The San Diego Padres say no cancer was found when manager Bob Melvin had prostate surgery on Wednesday.

Melvin, 60, was recovering at home Friday after being released from the hospital.

Melvin, who managed the A's the past 11 seasons, said Tuesday that he didn't think he had cancer, but the doctors wouldn't know until the surgery.

PADRES SIGN CANÓ >> The San Diego Padres signed veteran second baseman Robinson Canó to a major league contract and plan to use him as a left-handed bat off the bench.

Acting manager Ryan Christenso­n said he could get some occasional starts at second and designated hitter.

The New York Mets, who released Canó on Sunday, owe him nearly $45 million remaining on his original contract signed with Seattle. He will earn a prorated share of the $700,000 minimum.

Canó, 39, was designated for assignment on May 2 after hitting .195 with one home run and three RBIs in 43 plate appearance­s for the Mets. He sat out last season serving a second suspension for performanc­e-enhancing drugs.

Canó has a .302 career batting average with 2,632 hits, including 335 home runs and 571 doubles, and 1,305 RBIs in 17 seasons. DODGERS' KERSHAW ON IL >> The Los Angeles Dodgers placed Clayton Kershaw on the injured list with inflammati­on in a pelvic joint.

The Dodgers made the move several hours before Kershaw was slated to face the Philadelph­ia Phillies on Friday night.

Kershaw is off to an outstandin­g start to his 15th season with the Dodgers, going 4-0 with a 1.80 ERA.
