Earthquakes make trade after injury

-

One day after losing a top defender to a lengthy injury, the Earthquakes made a trade for his replacement.

San Jose acquired Jonathan Mensah from the Columbus Crew in exchange for up to $500,000 in general allocation money, with $200,000 of it guaranteed.

The trade for Mensah, 32, comes one day after the Quakes announced that Nathan, a 27-year-old Brazilian, would be out “indefinitely” with an ACL injury in his right knee.

Mensah has been the captain for the Crew since the 2020 season and won the MLS Cup that season, which included being named to the MLS' Best XI. In his six years with Columbus, he's played in 175 matches, scoring two goals and one assist.

San Jose is sending Columbus $200,000 in general allocation money ($100,000 for each of the next two seasons) and could send an additional $300,000 if they keep Mensah beyond this season ($150,000 per year in 2024 and 2025).

TIGER WOODS ANNOUNCES SURPRISE

RETURN >> Tiger Woods is returning to competition for the first time without the use of a cart since July, announcing Friday he will play at the Genesis Invitational in Los Angeles.

Woods was hopeful of playing next week's tournament at Riviera, where he is the host of an event that typically had the strongest field of the West Coast swing even before it became elevated with a $20 million purse.

The uncertainty came from a bout with plantar fasciitis as he was preparing to play in December. That kept him from playing in his Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas. He played a made-for-TV exhibition over 12 holes and the PNC Championship with his son. Both times he was allowed to ride in a cart.

Carts are not allowed on the PGA Tour and Woods has said he was not interested in using one to play at the highest level.

It will be his first regular PGA Tour event since Oct. 25, 2020, when he tied for 72nd against a 78-man field in his title defense of the Zozo Championship.

NO. 6 STANFORD REBOUNDS FROM RARE LOSS TO BEAT NO. 17 ARIZONA >> Stanford hasn't lost consecutive games in more than two years. It will be even longer after the Cardinal bounced back from one of their worst performances of the season with arguably their best.

Cameron Brink and Haley Jones each scored 18 points and the No. 6 Cardinal used a strong rebounding performance to beat No. 17 Arizona 84-60 on Thursday night.

The Cardinal (23-3, 11-2 Pac-12) won their sixth straight against the Wildcats (18-6, 8-5), a streak that includes the 2021 NCAA title game. Stanford moved into first place in the conference, a half-game ahead of No. 7 Utah.

Stanford also didn't seem to suffer for its 72-67 loss at Washington last Sunday in the eyes of the NCAA Selection Committee. Stanford was still a No. 1 seed in the committee's initial revealing of their current top 16 teams, which occurred at halftime of the nationally televised game.

The Cardinal next play Sunday morning at Arizona State.
