USF cools off Santa Clara with double-OT tourney win

Khalil Shabazz scored 38 points as San Francisco defeated Santa Clara 93-87 in double overtime on Saturday night in the quarterfin­als of the West Coast Conference Tournament in Las Vegas.

Shabazz also contribute­d seven rebounds, five assists and four steals for the Dons (20-13). Tyrell Roberts tallied 16 points and five rebounds.

Brandin Podziemski led the Broncos (23-9) with 22 points, 11 rebounds, nine assists and four steals. Carlos Stewart also had 22 points. The loss ended a seven-game win streak for Santa Clara.

OREGON STATE 69, CAL 66 >> Glenn Taylor Jr. scored 28 points, Michael Rataj scored the last four points of the game and the host Beavers (11-20, 5-15) rallied past the Golden Bears (11-20, 5-15) on Saturday in a Pac-12 regular-season finale.

Grant Newell's jumper gave Cal a 66-65 lead with 28 seconds left before Rataj's layup made it a one-point lead for the Beavers with 15 seconds left. NO. 1 HOUSTON 67, MEMPHIS 65 >> Jamal Shead scored 16 points, including the winning basket as time ran out, and the Cougars escaped a second-half rally by the host Tigers for a win Sunday in the regular-season finale.

Shead's basket from inside the foul lane — about 18 feet from the key — came as the horn sounded. Nine seconds earlier, Memphis' Kendric Davis drove to the basket and tied the game at 65. Houston chose not to call time out, and Shead gave the Cougars (292, 17-1 AAC) the victory.

Davis led Memphis (23-8, 13-5) with 26 points.

NO. 5 PURDUE 76, ILLINOIS 71 >> Brandon Newman scored 19 points, Zach Edey added 17 and the Boilermake­rs (265, 15-5 Big Ten) held on to beat the Fighting Illini (20-11, 11-9) in the regular-season finale.

DRAKE 77, BRADLEY 51 >> Tucker DeVries scored 22 points and the second-seeded Bulldogs (27-7) raced to their sixth NCAA Tournament berth by routing the top-seeded Braves (259) in the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament title game in St. Louis. UNC ASHEVILLE 77, CAMPBELL 73 >> Drew Pember had 29 points and the No. 1-seeded Bulldogs (27-7) beat the seventh-seeded Fighting Comets (1618) in the Big South Conference Tournament title game in Charlotte, N.C. KENNESAW ST. 67, LIBERTY 66 >> Terrell Burden scored 19 points and made a free throw with less than a second left to rally the top-seeded Bulldogs (26-8) over the No. 2-seeded Flames (26-8) for their first Atlantic Sun Conference championsh­ip and their first trip to the NCAA Tournament. TEXAS TECH SUSPENDS COACH >> Texas Tech suspended coach Mark Adams over “an inappropri­ate, unacceptab­le, and racially insensitiv­e comment” he made to a player.

The incident occurred in a meeting between Adams and a player, who wasn't identified, the school said in a news release.

“Adams was encouragin­g the student-athlete to be more receptive to coaching and referenced Bible verses about workers, teachers, parents, and slaves serving their masters,” the statement said. “Adams immediatel­y addressed this with the team and apologized.”

Texas Tech (16-15, 5-13 Big 12) plays West Virginia on Wednesday night in the Big 12 Tournament.

NO. 1 SOUTH CAROLINA 74, TENNESSEE 58 >> Zia Cooke scored 24 points as the Gamecocks beat the Volunteers in the SEC Tournament championsh­ip game in Greenville, S.C.

South Carolina (32-0) won its seventh league tournament in the past nine seasons.

Third-seeded Tennessee (23-11) was sky high after rallying from 17 points down and defeating No. 4 LSU on Saturday night.

NO. 7 IOWA 105, NO. 14 OHIO ST. 72 >> Caitlin Clark had 30 points, 17 assists and 10 rebounds as the Hawkeyes routed the Buckeyes (25-7) to win the Big Ten Tournament.
