Reliever Chapman acquired by Rangers

-

The Texas Rangers acquired Aroldis Chapman in a trade with the Kansas City Royals on Friday, adding a once-dominant closer to their bullpen as the AL West leaders chase their first division title in seven years.

The 35-year-old Chapman wasn't of much use to the last-place Royals, where the lefthander landed this season after a six-year stint with the New York Yankees. Just before that, he split 2016 between the Yankees and Cubs, helping Chicago win its first World Series championship in 108 years.

Kansas City gets left-hander Cole Ragans and minor league outfielder Roni Cabrera.

Chapman had two saves in 31 appearances for Kansas City.

He broke into the majors with Cincinnati in 2010 and pitched for the Reds through 2015. He is 24th on the career saves list with 317. BRAVES 16, MARLINS 4 >> Michael Soroka won his first home start in nearly three years, Matt Olson homered twice and drove in five runs and National League-leading Atlanta won its sixth straight game with a rout of Miami.

Ronald Acuña Jr., Eddie Rosario, Austin Riley and Sean Murphy also went deep to give the Braves 153 homers, by far the most in the majors. They hit 61 in June to set a franchise record for a single month, breaking the mark of 56 from June 2019.

Soroka (1-1) took the mound in a home game for the first time since Aug. 3, 2020, when he tore his Achilles tendon for the first of two times. He allowed five hits and three runs with no walks and seven strikeouts in six innings on Friday.

Atlanta broke the game open with a five-run first inning. Acuña singled and scored from first on Riley's double, followed by Olson's 434foot, opposite-field blast to left-center. Olson tops the NL with 28 homers, 10 in the first inning to lead the majors, and 67 RBIs.

The second-place Marlins ended a five-game winning streak and a seven-game road winning streak.

REDS 7, PADRES 5, 11 INNINGS >> Spencer Steer hit a game-ending two-run homer in the 11th and Cincinnati overcame Alexis Díaz's first blown save of the season in a wild win over stumbling San Diego.

Elly De La Cruz doubled to drive in Jonathan India with the tying run and De La Cruz tried to score from third on Nick Senzel's grounder, but was called out because he touched catcher Gary Sánchez's left foot. Steer followed with his homer off Drew Carlton (2-1).

Sánchez drove in Xander Bogaerts from second in the top of the 11th to put the Padres up 5-4, but they couldn't avoid their sixth straight loss.

CUBS 10, GUARDIANS 1 >> Justin Steele (9-2) tossed a three-hit shutout into the seventh inning and won his third straight start, and Chicago snapped a four-game skid with a win over Cleveland at Wrigley Field.

Christoper Morel hit a two-run homer and finished with three RBIs for the Cubs.
