The 2023 Toyota Crown Limited Hybrid Premium Sedan

You Are What You Drive — A Bottom Line Review

- By Tony Leopardo THE CAR GUY @ AUTOWIRE.NET

What is a Crown? The Crown is a 4 door sedan built in Aichi, Japan by Toyota. Toyota has replaced its large Avalon sedan with the Crown, an all new car that wants to bridge the gap between traditional sedans and crossovers. The nameplate may sound familiar, as Toyota sold a Crown sedan in America from 1958 through 1972.

The 2023 Toyota Crown is launching in three trim levels: XLE, Limited, and Platinum. The Crown XLE and Limited have a 2.5L liter 4 cylinder gas engine, driving the front wheels, with a hybrid electric motor in the rear axle. As a cut above the familiar, the Toyota Crown takes the premium sedan category in an entirely new direction.

With all new crossover styling, the Crown is based on the global GA-K platform, which underpins both Toyota sedans and SUVs. With an overall length of 194 inches, a height of 60.9 inches, and a width of 72.4 inches, the Toyota Crown is longer than the RAV4 and taller than the Camry.

Underneath the Crown’s cutting edge design is an all new Hybrid MAX power train. This driveline pairs the Toyota 2.4L turbocharged engine with an electric motor, generating 236 combined net HP horsepower, and 163 lb-ft of torque. The ECVT electronic continuous variable transmission sends power into an AWD all wheel drive traction control system, with drive terrain select mode and all Crowns are hybrids with AWD.

This week Toyota sent me a 2023 Crown Limited sedan with a base window sticker price of $45,550. The options on the test car are: the advanced technology package for $2,950, the premium paint for $425, a set of door puddle lamps for $165, and the preferred accessory package with all weather floor mats for $463. The MSRP manufactures suggested retail price, including the $1,095 delivery charge is: $50,648.

After adding in the state and local sales tax, plus the DMV and dealer fees, the out the door and in your garage total purchase price came to: $56,979. Toyota is aiming high with the new Crown sedan, and for those who love large cars, Crown is the smart choice, as there is really nothing else like the Crown full size hybrid sedan on the market today.

The new 2023 Crown has a unique driveline with a hybrid gas engine and electric motor. This combo has a fuel economy rating of 42 MPG in the city, 41 MPG on the highway, and 41 MPG in combined driving. The greenhouse gas rating is an 8, and the smog rating is a 7, both out of 10. The car gets over 40 MPG all day long, has an on-demand electronic AWD all wheel drive system, and ultra efficient regenerative braking,

And how powerful is regenerative braking? Nearly all of the kinetic energy propelling a vehicle forward is lost as heat when you apply the brakes. That’s a lot of wasted energy, so regenerative braking solves this problem by recapturing upwards of 70% of the kinetic energy and puts it back into the hybrid battery, that would all be lost with regular brakes.

Next up is safety and convenience, and that starts with: Toyota’s Safety Sense 3.0 pre collision system with pedestrian detection, full speed range dynamic radar cruise control, lane departure alert with steering assist, lane tracing assist, automatic high beams, road sign assist, proactive driving assist, a backup camera with dynamic gridlines, a blind spot monitor, front and rear parking assist with automatic braking, a smart door key system, push button start and a set of Toyota connected services running thru a 4G network.

Call, click or visit your local Toyota dealer for a test drive, and a Bottom Line price review, on the new 2023 Toyota Crown Limited Hybrid Premium sedan. And remember that the base price for a new Crown starts at only $26,900. Toyota - Let’s Go Places.

Be smart, stay safe, and just breathe. Remember, You Are What You Drive, and maybe, just for those reasons alone, you should Drive one, Buy one, Today. Have a great day, take care, and enjoy the ride - Tony the Car Guy.
