Help us select our high school Athletes of the Week

Welcome to the Bay Area News Group (Mercury News and East Bay Times) girls and boys Athlete of the Week poll.

For the entire academic year, we will provide a list of candidates who stood out over the previous week and allow you, the reader, to vote for the winner.

This week, we consider performanc­es from Jan. 22-27.

Polls can be found on our websites — mercurynew­s.com/sports/highschool-sports/ or eastbaytim­es. com/sports/high-school-sports/ — where voting closes at 5p.m. Wednesday.

Vote as many times as you'd like until then without using bots or any other artificial methods of voting. Winners are announced each Friday online and in the print edition of the Mercury News and East Bay Times sports sections. Candidates for future Athlete of the Week polls can be nominated at highschool­s@bayareanew­sgroup. com.

We accept nomination­s until 11 a.m. each Monday. We also review stats submitted to MaxPreps by coaches/ team statistici­ans.

On to the nominees:

GIRLS Sayonara Chavez, De Anza soccer:

Chavez, a senior, scored twice in a victory against Swett. That gave her 15 goals on the season, with her season-high coming the previous week when she scored four goals against Vallejo.

Yesenia Fonseca, Hill soccer:

Fonseca, a sophomore, scored a goal in HIll's 2-0victory over Yerba Buena. That gave her six goals on the season according to stats inputted into MaxPreps.

Kendra Furtado, Gunderson soccer:

Furtado, a sophomore, had a save and kept a clean sheet in Gunderson's 4-0victory over Del Mar. Furtado has 44saves in 14 games for Gunderson.

Cierra Gallardo, James Logan basketball:

Gallardo, a senior, had back-to-back double-doubles in league wins. She had 20 points and 10rebounds against Moreau Catholic, and 16 points, 11 rebounds and two blocks against American to give her eight doubledoub­les on the season.

Quinn Godfrey, Branham basketball:

Godfrey, a senior, had an epic performanc­e against Evergreen Valley. She had 44 points, 10rebounds and two assists in the victory. In the next game against Christophe­r, she had 29points and six rebounds.

Jhai Johnson, Oakland Tech basketball:

Johnson, a sophomore, did everything for the Bulldogs in their 63-27 league victory over Oakland. She scored 19 points, grabbed 22 rebounds and had 10steals in a dominant all-around performanc­e.

Karyss Lacanlale, Acalanes basketball:

Lacanlale, a junior, made seven 3-pointers and scored 30 points in a rout over Ygnacio Valley. Acalanes improved to 19-4 after winning its eighth consecutiv­e game.

Nina Llamas, Santa Clara basketball:

Lammas, a senior, scored 31points in a victory over Gunn, and then put in 27 points in another win against Cupertino. The previous week, she had scored 31and 26against Milpitas and Wilcox, respective­ly.

Maxine Sutisna, Archbishop Riordan basketball:

Sutisna, a junior, was consistent­ly excellent in Riordan's WCAL victories over St. Ignatius and St. Francis. She scored 16points against St. Ignatius, and then scored the same amount vs. St. Francis a couple days later to help the Crusaders improve to 5-3 in league play.

Laia Williams, Lincoln-San Jose basketball:

Williams, a senior, scored nine of her game-high 11 points at the free-throw line as Lincoln defeated Prospect 31-26. That victory snapped Prospect's 13-game winning streak.

BOYS Elliot Conley, San Ramon Valley basketball:

The junior scored 21 points, 17 before halftime, to help lead the Wolves to a 58-45victory on the road over Dublin in East Bay Athletic League play. Also had nine points in a 74-50victory over Foothill as SRV improved to 20-4 overall and 6-1 in the league.

David Hernandez Escobar, St. Francis soccer:

Scored two goals to lead the Lancers past Sacred Heart Cathedral 4-1in a West Catholic Athletic League game. Also had a goal in a 2-0 win over Valley Christian as powerhouse St. Francis finished the week 14-0-1 overall and 8-0-1 in the WCAL.

Tyler Jones, Archbishop Mitty basketball:

Scored 18 points in a 58-50comeback victory at home over Serra in West Catholic Athletic League play. The outcome kept the Monarchs within a game of first-place Riordan in the league standings. Also scored 10 points earlier in the week in a victory at Bellarmine.

Ethan Kitch, Gunn basketball:

The senior had a terrific performanc­e in his team's 69-62loss to Milpitas, finishing with 32 points (6 for 9 from 3-point range) and 10 rebounds. He also 17 points (3 for 5 on 3-pointers) in a 64-61 loss to Los Altos.

Aadi Malali, Dougherty Valley basketball:

The senior led the Wildcats to three EBAL victories during the week. Scored 26 in a 59-52 win over Amador Valley, 29in a 56-53victory over Monte Vista and 14in a 58-52triumph over California as the Wildcats improved to 15-9 overall and 4-3 in the league.

Sean Odle, Wilcox soccer:

The junior scored two goals as the Chargers tied Lynbrook 3-3 in Santa Clara Valley Athletic League El Camino Division play. in the previous match, he had a goal and assist in a 3-2victory over Cupertino. Wilcox began this week 8-51 overall and 5-2-1 in the league.

Eric Preston, Pinole Valley soccer:

The 5-foot-6, 120-pound sophomore was a scoring machine in two matches, finishing with seven goals and an assist in a 9-0victory over Swett and two goals in a 4-0 win over De Anza as Pinole Valley improved to 11-3-1 overall and 9-1-1in the Tri-County Athletic League Stone Division. Preston has 31goals and five assists this season.

Declan Sitter, Menlo School soccer:

Contribute­d to three goals as the Knights won two games to improve to 8-0in the West Bay Athletic League. In a 4-0win over Harker, Sitter scored the first goal and also assisted on a goal. Earlier, he had an assist in a 3-0victory over Crystal Springs Uplands.

Cortevious Taylor, Granada basketball:

Finished with 23 points and made the game-saving block at the buzzer to propel Granada to a 60-58victory at home over San Ramon Valley in EBAL play. Also scored 16points two days later as the Matadors, who are 20-2, 6-1, turned back visiting Dublin 64-50.

Julian Vaucher, Las Lomas basketball:

The junior scored 25 points for the second consecutiv­e game as Las Lomas cruised past Berean Christian 84-42in Diablo Athletic League play. He was 9-for-13 shooting. In the previous game, he had 25 points in an 8171victor­y over Benicia.
